What Is the Largest Casino in the World?

This is the time of the year where you may looking for haunted casinos to visit. But what is the largest casino in the world?

When people search for the largest casino in the world, the answer can depend on how “largest” is defined.

Some rankings count an entire resort complex, including hotel towers, restaurants, retail shops, meeting space, theaters, and convention halls. That can produce inflated comparisons and make it difficult to tell which property actually has the biggest gambling area.

A more useful measure is published gaming-floor space. According to World Atlas, using that standard, WinStar World Casino & Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma, stands out as the world’s largest casino.

WinStar lists nearly 400,000 square feet of gaming floor space across nine themed gaming plazas. The Chickasaw Nation-owned resort also reports more than 10,000 electronic games, more than 90 table games, and a 55-table poker room.

WinStar Holds a Sizable Lead

WinStar’s nearly 400,000-square-foot gaming floor gives it a clear advantage over other large casino properties. The gap is especially notable when comparing only casino space rather than the full size of a resort.

The property is located near the Oklahoma-Texas border, north of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Its location has helped make it a major regional gaming destination, attracting visitors from Oklahoma, Texas, and beyond.

WinStar has long used “World’s Biggest Casino” in its branding, but the claim is strongest when it is tied to its published gaming-floor figure. Casino rankings can vary widely when outside sources use estimates or include non-gaming sections of a property. For example, some published lists cite a larger overall WinStar footprint, but that can include casino-related attractions or other resort space rather than the gaming floor alone.

Tulalip Moves Into Second Place

Tulalip Resort Casino in Washington has emerged as one of the closest challengers among major U.S. casino properties. Following a 70,250-square-foot expansion, Tulalip reported a total casino footprint of 270,250 square feet.

It’s also a great casino to visit over the holidays.

That number puts Tulalip just ahead of the 270,000-square-foot figures often published for Thunder Valley Casino Resort in California and Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, also in California.

Tulalip’s expansion added more than 400 slot machines and lifted the property’s total to more than 2,600 gaming devices. The casino is owned by the Tulalip Tribes and is located north of Seattle.

Tribal Casinos Dominate the “World’s Largest Casino” Conversation

One of the biggest takeaways from a gaming-floor-space comparison is the role of tribal gaming. According to researchers at World Atlas, nine of the 10 largest casinos in this type of ranking are tribally owned.

That reflects the scale and importance of tribal casino operations in the United States. Tribal nations have developed many of the country’s largest gaming destinations, often pairing large casino floors with hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, golf courses, event spaces, and retail offerings.

WinStar, owned by the Chickasaw Nation, is the most prominent example. Tulalip Resort Casino is owned by the Tulalip Tribes, while several other large casino properties are operated by tribal nations in California, Connecticut, Florida, and elsewhere.

Best Way to Determine the Largest Casino in the World

If you’re trying to figure which is the world’s largest casino, gaming-floor space is the most direct comparison. It measures the area devoted to slot machines, table games, poker, bingo, sportsbooks, and other gambling activity.

A resort may be physically larger because of hotel rooms or convention halls, but that does not necessarily mean it has more casino space. Using published gaming-floor figures helps separate the size of a resort from the actual size of its casino.

By that standard, WinStar World Casino & Resort remains the leader. With nearly 400,000 square feet of gaming floor space, it has a substantial lead over Tulalip Resort Casino’s 270,250 square feet and the roughly 270,000-square-foot floors at Thunder Valley and Morongo.
