Reigning PGA Championship winner and Champion Golfer of the Year Xander Schauffele withdrew from The American Express 2025 on Monday afternoon due to medical reasons, according to the Associated Press.

Schauffele, currently second in the Official World Golf Ranking, made his 2025 debut at The Sentry in Maui, finishing tied for 36th. The 31-year-old then departed Hawaii and flew cross country to Florida for TGL's inaugural match, where his New York Golf Club got waxed 9-2. Despite the lackluster performance from Schauffele and his teammates against The Bay Golf Club, he didn't show signs of injury or anything that would force him to adjust his upcoming schedule.

Schauffele is now the second star-caliber player to withdraw from The American Express in as many weeks, as World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler also pulled out of the tournament while recovering from minor surgery to his right hand. The two-time Masters winner reportedly punctured his right hand with glass while preparing Christmas dinner and has yet to tee it up in 2025.

Without Schauffele and Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Sam Burns, and Rickie Fowler headline the 156-player field in California's Coachella Valley this week.
