YouTube has opened up a new path for aspiring golfers, letting them build careers without ever joining a professional tour.
Many skilled players who might have once aimed for the PGA Tour are now finding more lucrative opportunities through content creation. Some of them end up making more money than they would have by going pro.
Top names like Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson have noticed the shift, putting significant time into their YouTube channels to engage fans outside of traditional tournaments.
With such high-level talent choosing content over competition, it has become harder to separate amateurs from pros. It is not always clear just how skilled some of these YouTubers really are.
In that context, Wesley Bryan – a former PGA Tour winner who has become a prominent YouTuber – recently made a controversial assertion: he believes a specific content creator could “run circles” around Collin Morikawa and potentially defeat even Rory McIlroy, the world number two.
Brad Dalke was once seen as a likely future PGA Tour player after finishing second at the 2016 U.S. Amateur. His strong performance earned him spots in The Masters and the U.S. Open, but struggles with his driver and confidence issues led him to shift towards a career in YouTube Golf.
The 28-year-old has recently started to live up to his early promise, winning consecutive Creator Classics and playing a key role in capturing the first Internet Invitational title.
Those performances have caught the attention of Wesley Bryan, who believes Dalke’s game is now strong enough to match anyone in professional golf.
Bryan said: “What I watched out of Brad, is Brad could run circles around Collin Morikawa right now. He could, I’m telling you. His game, in current form, he can compete with any of the best players in the world.
“Obviously, Collin is a substantially better golfer, but any given day… Brad Dalke can beat Rory McIlroy on any given day right now.”
While it may sound far-fetched, Dalke’s recent results suggest there could be something behind Bryan’s comments. It is certainly a match-up fans would be eager to see.
If the YouTube Handicap Tracker is accurate, Dalke stacks up well against top competition. He currently sits second on their rankings behind Bryson DeChambeau.
The site lists him at +7.3. That puts him 2.2 behind DeChambeau and 0.7 ahead of Bryan, while also being 4.6 better than fellow YouTuber Grant Horvat.
That comparison with Horvat is worth noting, since he regularly takes on tour pros and typically gives them seven shots over 18 holes, which seems to level things out based on his results so far.
If there is really that much gap between Horvat and Dalke, then the numbers suggest there is not much separating him from some very big names – something Bryan seems fully convinced of after watching him play up close.
