Just as she did on the uneven bars during Tuesday’s gold medal-winning performance, Suni Lee put the finishing touches on Simone Biles‘ roast of former US gymnast Mykayla Skinner.
After Team USA’s gymnastics squad claimed gold during the 2024 Paris Olympics team final on Tuesday, Simone Biles wasted no time appearing to put the former gymnast on blast by posting a photo to Instagram that called her team a bunch of “lack of talent, lazy Olympic champions.” This comes afte r prior comments were made by Skinner about the team’s work ethic.
A pivotal member of the team, Lee joined in on Biles’ bashing of the 2012 Olympian. “Put a finger down if Simone Biles just ended you,” Lee wrote in a comment on that post, via the New York Post, which has since been deleted.
It’s no surprise that Lee joined in on the dog pile. After all, Skinner’s comments weren’t just about Biles — they were about the entire 2024 Olympic team that includes Lee, Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles and Hezly Rivera. Skinner said in a now-deleted YouTube video that the depth of Team USA “isn’t like what it used to be,” and that, “the girls just don’t have the work ethic,” that they had in the past.
Skinner did apologize for her comments, writing, “I want to formally apologize to Team USA and our gymnastic community for my comments during my recent YouTube episodes of the gymnastics Olympic trials. It was not my intention to offend or disrespect any of the athletes or to take away from their hard work. Your hard work and dedication have paid off and I congratulate each and every one of you.”
Regardless of her apology, current and former Olympic gymnasts have weighed in on the matter as well. McKayla Maroney, who was a vault specialist on the 2012 London team that won gold in the all-around and silver in the vault, replied to the Instagram post where Biles sent the shade.
“It doesn’t get more ironic than this,” Maroney wrote. “She f’d around n found out fr. Feels like I need to apologize just to redeem my first name.”
Biles has long since dubbed her excursion to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games as a “redemption tour.” After she pulled herself out of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, winning gold three years later in Paris — and proving her haters wrong — alongside her teammates must feel rewarding for the Olympic champion.
