High school football coach Leyton Hernandez is dead at 28 following a horrific car crash in Texas.
Hernandez, who coached at Veterans Memorial High School in Temple, is said to have collided with another car after running a stop sign.
Texas outlet KCEN TV cites a police report noting that Hernandez was driving outside the Coastal Bend region on Friday afternoon when he drove past the sign and hit the other vehicle on North General Bruce Drive and Hart Road.
The coach was pronounced dead on arrival after being rushed to hospital.
“Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the first vehicle struck the second vehicle after failing to stop at the sign,” the outlet reports.
“Hernandez was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival. Another individual involved in the accident was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”
Authorities say they are still investigating the fatal collision.
Hernandez was well known in his community after playing college football at Texas A&M-Kingsville, later transitioning to education and coaching.
Tributes poured in from all over once news of his passing began to spread.
“The VMHS community is heartbroken as we mourn the tragic loss of our beloved teacher and coach, Leyton Hernandez,” his school said in a statement. “He made a lasting impact on our students, staff, and community, and he will be deeply missed.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to his father and mother, Dr. Roland Hernandez and Dr. Cynthia Hernandez, and to his sister, Mrs. Lauren Stinson, during this unimaginable time,” the school added. “Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”
VMHS has also offered counseling to students and staff following the tragedy.
Hernandez had worked as a teacher and coach at the school for the past five years. His father, Roland, is a Corpus Christi Independent School District superintendent.
Our thoughts are with Leyton’s family and friends amid these trying circumstances.
May he rest in peace.
