The first Saturday in May is here, and Churchill Downs is ready for the 152nd Kentucky Derby. The Run for the Roses has a competitive field this year, and with the favorite drawing plenty of attention heading into race day, the excitement around horse racing's most iconic afternoon is exactly where it should be.
The 2026 Kentucky Derby goes off Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, with post time set for 6:57 p.m. ET. NBC picks up television coverage starting at 2:30 p.m. ET while Peacock streaming begins at noon ET for those who want to get in early on the buildup.
The field has seen some late movement since the post-position draw. Three horses — No. 20 Fulleffort, No. 5 Right to Party and No. 13 Silent Tactic — were scratched, bringing three alternates into the lineup.

Getting a horse into the Kentucky Derby field is not a straightforward process. Only 20 horses can run each year. To earn a spot, a 3-year-old must compete in a designated prep race series that runs from September through mid-April, with points awarded to the top five finishers in each race.
When the qualifying period closes, the 20 horses sitting at the top of the points standings earn their place in the starting gate. Horses that win their international qualifying series can also secure entry. Those that make it all line up in Louisville on the first Saturday in May.
