Cady Hill, the iconic Saratoga Springs estate which belonged to Marylou Whitney and her husband John Hendrickson, was listed for sale this week. The asking price for the 120-acre property, part of which was built before the Revolutionary War, is $16 million.
The property was the summertime home base for Whitney, who was was widely recognized as one of the most successful owner/breeders in racing. She married Cornelius Vanderbilt "Sonny" Whitney in 1958 and learned about the sport through his racing stable, which had been a tradition in his family. Following Sonny Whitney's death in 1992, Marylou opened her own stable and eventually won the Kentucky Oaks, the Belmont Stakes, and the Travers.
Marylou was remembered not just for her racing success, but her many impactful charity projects in the local area alongside Hendrickson -- including their long-time devotion to backstretch employee assistance in the form of new dormitories, community facilities and services.
Cady Hill was central to Marylou's social and philanthropic activities during the summer racing seasons at Saratoga. The main house was once a stagecoach stop and was purchased by Harry Payne and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1926 before Sonny bought the property in 1936.
The estate, which is just outside the town and largely sheltered by forests and gates, features the four-story main house, an indoor pool, a chapel, two single family homes, an office building, and garage space for 11 cars.
