Colton Herta is making the switch to Formula 2 next year from IndyCar as he chases a spot on the Formula 1 grid. It's a significant change for the American, and he has been warned of stepping into a completely different style of racing.

Herta has been incredibly fast in IndyCar on ovals and road courses. He has won nine races since 2019 while showcasing some spectacular car control. This adaptability may help him adjust to Formula 2, but the majority of tracks will be completely new.

Herta's F2 campaign will be combined with a test driver role at the Cadillac F1 Team, which will help him learn from the team's race drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez.

It will be intriguing to see Herta manage European motorsport once more, as well as the different style of racing and tyres.

Alex Brundle, son of former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle, warned Herta that he is transitioning into something completely different in 2026.

He explained in commentary on Sky Sports F1: "I think anyone who is a fan of any series which is not Formula 1 always thinks in the back of their mind, how would my favourite driver, the driver I'm watching, the driver who's winning the series, I'm watching at the moment fair in the pinnacle of motorsport. I commend them for being brave enough to throw Colton into that scenario.

"I think it's going to be very, very difficult. What we've not got here is a driver or a sportsperson who's competing in high jump in America, coming to compete in high jump in Europe. We've got a different genre of the same sport.

"These cars are specific. The tyres are different, and there's a lot of learning to do. It's going to be a great challenge for Colton, and I think that it's going to be incredible to watch him engage with that challenge."

Colton Herta is taking a risk leaving the comfort of IndyCar

Herta has been a frontrunner in IndyCar, scoring two podiums this season, while Alex Palou dominated, winning his fourth title.

Cadillac aren't guaranteeing him anything and will have to earn his way onto the F1 grid while battling young chargers who have honed the craft in F1's junior categories.

He has to hit the ground running, as a difficult start may be difficult to recover from amid a multitude of things to learn.
