20 less-frequented European beach destinations for this summer

If you haven’t started already, it’s time to start planning your Euro trip for the summer! However, it’s understandable if you’re unsure where to go, especially if you hate crowds. The likes of Santorini, Côte d’Azur, and southern Spain are overrun by tourists every year. Luckily, I’ve rounded up 20 beach destinations on the continent where you won’t be bumping elbows everywhere you go!

Brittany, France

Most visitors to the country opt to head south. However, I beg you to reconsider! The northwest of France is a bit like the Pacific Northwest, more temperate (no 100-plus days in summer), with beautiful sandy beaches and great seafood! You’ll also have the opportunity to sample the epic Breton cuisine, full of unique pastries, world-class cider, and fresh local ingredients.

Sardinia, Italy

Yes, I know, all your friends who have visited Italy rave about the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre. But if you want a vacation full of brighter blue water, fewer visitors, and lower prices, head to the island of Sardinia! The island has bright blue water and white sands, just waiting to be the location of your next vacation.

Albania becomes increasingly popular each year, particularly in the south of the country, where its amazing coast is located — if you want to avoid the crowds of Saranda and the surrounding area.

Zadar, Croatia

Home to some of the best sunsets on the continent, Zadar is overlooked by travelers who go directly to Split and Dubrovnik, but the town, a UNESCO site, has better and less crowded beaches than the rest of Dalmatia.

Ksamil, Albania

In the heart of what is known as the “Albanian Riviera,” Ksamil is the relaxed neighbor to Saranda. The beautiful waters have plenty of beach clubs and cafes to keep you going all day.

Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Montenegro is an up-and-coming destination in the Balkans, and Herceg Novi is a great place to relax. The small coastal town doesn’t see the crowds of Kotor and, thus, is much better for chilling out.

In the far west of France, on the Bay of Biscay is a romantic little town you’ll be telling all your friends about after visiting. Wander the port, explore the old towers, and eat fantastic seafood.

This island is ideal if you’re a beach and wine-lover, as the rocky shores are perfect for exploring. And it produces some of Croatia’s best wine. You can even book biking tours to wineries around the island.

Budva, Montenegro

The sandy beaches in Budva are a rarity in the famously rocky-shored Balkans. The beach clubs here can be crowded in peak season, but if you visit outside of July and August, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Whiterocks Beach, Ireland

A local favorite but not as well-known by international visitors, this beach in County Antrim is the stuff of dreams. The white stretches up against water that changes with the light, and caves beyond your imagination are a wonderful backdrop for a day at the beach.

Neum, Bosnia & Herzegovina

The tiny sliver of Bosnia & Herzegovina coast is absolutely worth visiting. Bonus: it has none of the crowds of Croatia’s beaches!

The ancient town of Assos is a must-visit for history buffs, and for those less educationally inclined, its beach is ideal for a day of relaxation. From these shores, some of the best views of the Aegean Sea can be seen.

Yes, northern Europe has beaches, too! This resort city not far from the capital, Latvia is likely everything you’ve been looking for in a vacation destination. Miles of golden sand, temps that aren’t scorching, and best of all, friendly prices!

Based on the color of the water alone, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve just stepped into the Caribbean. But no, you’re in Scotland, where sea life and bird spotting are great activities for all visitors.

Gotska Sandön, Sweden

This island beach is located north of Gotland and is considered one of the best in the country. Miles of white sand and dunes make you feel like you're on a movie set. And as Sweden isn’t exactly known as a beach destination, you’ll have fewer people sunbathing next to you.

Algarve, Portugal

Portugal has long forgotten its label as a true “hidden gem,” but avoiding Lisbon and nearby beaches will certainly be worth it. The Algarve region is known for amazing weather year-round, and you won’t be crowded the entire time.

Malta

When people envision holidays on Mediterranean islands, Greece, Italy, and Spain are the usual choices. However, Malta should be considered as a less crowded and cheaper alternative. Additionally, the interesting history means you’ll have a unique culture that mixes Italian and Arab to explore!

Iceland might not be the most obvious choice when imagining a beach getaway. However, the island has hundreds of miles of coast, the best in the West Fjords.

Usually, the Greek islands are awash with tourists, but with thousands that make up the various chains, you’re bound to find one that isn’t. A top pick would be Milos, with all the charm and beauty of Santorini and Corfu, better beaches, and fewer crowds!
