20 small things you can do to make the world better

The world can feel overwhelming at any moment, whether because of an overbearing boss or the doom scrolling being done at this exact moment while avoiding said overbearing boss. Because of that (or whatever else has got people down), people tend to think, well, that's just the way it is. Here's the thing: it doesn't have to be that way, and people have the power to do the tiniest things in life to help push the collective reality they share with others to be bearable. Lost on how to go about that? Well, let's get on track and talk about the small things you can do to make the world a better place.

Recycling is a very simple thing that can be done without even really thinking about it. Set up another can to toss recyclables into instead of throwing them into the garbage. Also, don’t be scared to pick up a recyclable item out in the world and place it where it needs to be. That’s not only recycling but also helping ensure pollution is lessened.

Blood banks are always in need of donations, and plasma is a whole other beast. Plasma is a longer donation process, but it can go on to help in huge ways, such as with cancer patients.

There are countless ways to volunteer on a local level: Animal shelters, reading at the library, and community clean-up events. See, the possibilities are endless when it comes to volunteer opportunities so it’s not hard to find something tailor-made for everyone’s specific interests.

Grandparents don't hold onto all those old letters because they are a hoarding generation. They do it because a handwritten note is sentimental, especially in a day and age where everything is online. No one is saying to write a novel; it's just a quick note to let someone know they're being thought of.

Not every single negative thought that pops into one’s head has to be shared on the internet.

Kendra Beltran went to college with no game plan and found herself falling back on her love of writing soon after graduating all the way back in 2009. Since then, she's written for MTV Geek, Cosplay Central, Collider, Apartment Therapy, and many other sites that allowed her to showcase her love of all things pop culture. When she isn't writing, Kendra is either hosting her show, Crushgasm, baking all the cookies, or spoiling her fur baby, Mason.
