21 recipes inspired by “The 12 Days of Christmas”

While recently listening to “The 12 Days of Christmas,” it occurred to us that the song mentions a few different foods. As a result, we challenged ourselves to find recipes that match every one of the song’s entries — even the non-food ones — while doubling up on a few to beef up the list. We had to get a little creative with some of these entries, lest we end up with a slideshow of mostly bird recipes, and we also wanted some variation between breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and desserts. Ring in the holidays with these 21 recipes in honor of “The 12 Days of Christmas.”

The 11 pipers were piping instruments, but you’re more likely to find us piping a pastry bag around the holidays. For some festive flair, try these Christmas tree cupcakes from My Everyday Table, which top the cake mix of your choice with a heaping helping of frosting.

Here’s another classic Christmas dessert that uses a piping bag: a yule log. Also called a bûche de Noël, a yule log is a rolled sponge cake that’s completely covered in chocolate frosting in order to look like an actual piece of wood. If you use this recipe from Tasty, you’ll also need the piping bag to make the meringue mushrooms!

You may have heard of a Lady Baltimore Cake — a dessert layered with fruits and nuts and covered in a whipped vanilla frosting — but a Lord Baltimore Cake is a bit different. The two mostly feature the same ingredients, with the most notable difference being that the Lord Baltimore cake uses egg yolks instead of egg whites, making for a richer, denser dessert. Try this one via Bake from Scratch.

Ladyfingers (Nine ladies dancing)

Ladyfingers sound more like something spooky you’d serve for Halloween than a Christmas dish, but that’s fine because ladyfingers aren’t really a Christmas thing anyway — they’re just a delicious year-round dessert. However, in the colder months, these sponge cake cookies happen to be the perfect accompaniment to a steamy cup of coffee or hot chocolate. If you’re a beginner when it comes to these little biscuits, try this easy recipe from Alyona’s Cooking.

You already have the ladyfingers, so why not go a step further and make tiramisu? This Italian dessert is made from the aforementioned sponge cookies dipped in coffee or espresso, which are layered with eggs, mascarpone, and sugar, and then dusted with cocoa powder. We suggest this easy recipe courtesy of Tastes Better From Scratch, which ditches the whipped eggs for an even lighter layer of whipped cream.

These cream puff swans from Barbara Bakes aren’t just for aesthetics. They’re delicious, too! You’ll need your piping bag again — the 11 pipers will be pleased — but with Barbara’s step-by-step directions, these swans are a cinch.

Onion rings aren’t Christmas-y, but they certainly are crowd-pleasers. And these beer-battered onion rings from Spoon Fork Bacon will have your guests asking for them as an annual tradition. That’s because the rings are crisped to golden perfection thanks to the combination of all-purpose flour, rice flour, and cornstarch. (Heads up: You’ll want to make a lot more than five of these.)

Birds nest baklava (Four calling birds)

These Middle Eastern sweets might be an odd pick for the “four calling birds” entry, but we have a bunch of actual birds coming up soon, so let’s put those off for one more slide. Plus, pistachios are a common ingredient in Christmas desserts already. So why not try this bird's nest baklava from Cookin’ With Mima? It looks complicated but is actually very simple (all you need is phyllo dough, ghee, simple syrup, and pistachios) and fun to make, too!

Three French hens, three hen-related recipes, starting with cornish game hens. These birds are easier and quicker to cook than most poultry, and the meat is extra tender. Keep in mind that one hen will feed 1-2 people, so plan accordingly when making this roasted cornish hen recipe from Spend With Pennies. If you cook them alongside potatoes, carrots, and onions, it’s a whole meal!

But to shake things up, we instead want to recommend this chicken parmesan baked ziti recipe from Gimme Some Oven. It’s a simplified recipe that requires just six ingredients: ziti, chicken, marinara, mozzarella, parmesan, and basil.

Don’t spend the extra money on store-bought chocolate turtles when it’s cheaper and much more fun to make your own at home. This recipe from Small Town Woman calls for just four ingredients — pecans, caramels, heavy cream, and chocolate chips — and the only appliance you’ll need is a microwave.

Panettone (Two turtles doves)

Panettone (Two turtles doves)

Okay, stick with us on this one. Colomba Pasquale translates to “Easter dove” because it’s a bread that’s traditionally made for Easter. This Italian specialty would be an odd pick for Christmas, but luckily, Colomba Pasquale has two Christmas counterparts: panettone and pandoro. Panettone is sweet, light, and airy but packed with candied oranges, cranberries, currants, and raisins. Sugar Geek Show makes it simple with this recipe.

Pandoro (Two turtles doves)

Obviously, we also have to include pandoro, since we just mentioned it. Pan d'oro, which means “golden bread,” is sweeter than panettone, has more of a fluffy texture, and is topped with powdered sugar. It can be a little complicated to make, but this recipe from An Italian In My Kitchen simplifies it enough that you’ll think you have an Italian in your kitchen. (Unless you already do.) Just be sure to provide your own pandoro pan.

Roasted birds get most of the holiday attention, but this recipe from Food Network (courtesy of famous chef Jamie Oliver) pan fries the partridge instead. It will also show you how to make a mixture of barley, peas, and lettuce, which is the perfect bed on which to lay your cooked partridge. (But feel free to substitute your own side!)

Poached pears are a holiday classic and a versatile dish, too. It can be served as a side to turkey or other main courses or as a tasty dessert that’s not cake, pie, or cookies. This recipe from Veggie Desserts goes the latter route, poaching the pears in a spiced red wine sauce and pairing them with from-scratch cinnamon cream.

Brewers officially have a legit MVP candidate

On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers extended their winning streak to 11 games, and a key part of the team's momentum is a player who is in the National League MVP race. The red-hot Brewers entered Tuesday night facing one of the biggest threats to their winning streak, Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes. Milwaukee torched Skenes for two home runs and four earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched. Brewers first baseman Andrew Vaughn added extra damage in the sixth inning with a three-run home run that increased Milwaukee's lead to 12-0. Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Vaughn is in the NL MVP race after his home run on Tuesday night. "Andrew Vaughn suddenly in top 10 NL MVP discussion with another 3-run HR, giving him 32 RBI since joining the Brewers," Nightengale posted on X. "He is the gift that keeps on giving from the White Sox. They are about to go 24-4 since his arrival." Vaughn has helped the Brewers overrun and then take a commanding lead on the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Following their 14-0 win Tuesday night, the Brewers extended their lead to 7.5 games over the Cubs for first place. Vaughn is turning out to be a steal for the Brewers, as Milwaukee only gave up veteran pitcher Aaron Civale and cash considerations for the first baseman on June 13. While Vaughn might have a case to be in the top 10, he has much work before he becomes a legitimate contender for the NL MVP. Per FanDuel, Los Angeles Dodgers star slugger Shohei Ohtani leads the race with -20000 odds. Philadelphia Phillies left fielder Kyle Schwarber is second with +1800 odds. Those two players have been more consistent this season, whereas Vaughn has come on strong since leaving Chicago.

Jets QB Justin Fields had 'alarming' practice against Giants

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields found out he has a long way to go following his performance at Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Giants. Per Connor Hughes of SNY TV, Fields started hot at the practice before struggling during the move-the-ball period. "Very interesting practice for #Jets QB Justin Fields," Hughes posted on X. "He finished 7 of 12 with a TD. 5 of 5 to start practice. Then 0 for 4. Finished 2 of 3 with the really impressive TD to Jeremy Ruckert in red zone (starter 18 yard line). "The offensive performance was a bit alarming in move-the-ball period of practice. Fields Co. had three attempts to get down field. They didn’t gain a first down. Only gained yards twice (two short Breece Hall runs). Three sacks. That needs to be fixed. #Giants defense toyed with NYJ during that period." Some Jets fans online thought Hughes was using hyperbole to characterize the practice, but he doubled down on his judgment of the offense. Fields looked strong on his first and only drive in the Jets' 30-10 win over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. He went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed two times for 14 yards and a touchdown. However, the Giants defense at the joint practice is a much better unit than the short-handed one the Packers trotted out for the first preseason game. Fields' issues seen with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers, with holding the ball too long and not being able to pass consistently downfield, were a factor against the Giants. Following Saturday's game, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Fields was getting better but had a lot to improve on. Tuesday's practice was a humbling reminder that Fields needs to become a consistent passer if the Jets are going to move the ball on good defenses in the regular season.

Reason for Struggling Warriors-Bulls Trade Involving Jonathan Kuminga

The Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls are two teams stuck in major limbo. On one end, the Warriors have not made any signifcant moves during NBA free agency, largely due to not finding a solution to Jonathan Kuminga's contract dilemma. On the other end, the Chicago Bulls have been stuck trying to find a solution for both Nikola Vucevic and Josh Giddey. Coincidentally, the two teams could very easily help each other, but it's looking like they won't. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Warriors are not open to any sign-and-trades for Jonathan Kuminga that would force them to trade either Buddy Hield or Moses Moody. "Golden State values both players quite highly, sources say, while maintaining high expectations for both Hield and Moody to be consistent contributors who prove reliable in providing the necessary spacing to boost the Warriors' half-court offense in the postseason," Fischer said. Why Won't a Jonathan Kuminga Trade to the Chicago Bulls Happen? From Fischer's analysis and reporting, the Warriors refusing to trade either Hield or Moody will be the main reason why a trade does not happen between the Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls. "The Warriors' refusal to entertain the prospect of surrendering Hield or Moody in those circumstances are among the prime reasons that it's difficult to envision Golden State and Chicago ever finding common ground on a sign-and-trade construction that features Kuminga and Giddey switching teams," Fischer said. Are the Golden State Warriors Interested in Josh Giddey? It may have seemed like the Warriors' interest in Josh Giddey seemed to have come out of nowhere, but according to Fischer, their interest is genuine. However, if the team has to trade Hield or Moody, it won't be happening. "I'm told that the Warriors continue to value Giddey's skillset and have communicated their interest to the Australian point guard's representation. There simply does not appear to be a feasible pathway to such a trade … not right now," Fischer said. Simply stated, the Golden State Warriors are interested in trading for Josh Giddey, which would likely be for Jonathan Kuminga, but the salaries make it tough. "The base-year compensation issue alone makes it challenging before we even get to the limited salary-matching and outgoing player flexibility that Golden State is currently facing," Fischer concluded. The Warriors and Bulls still have over a month before training camp, but once the clock reaches September, then it may be short.

USC Trojans, Lincoln Riley Dealt Another Harsh Ranking Ahead of Season

The common theme for this USC Trojans team has been exclusion, whether it's a Big Ten or top-25 ranking. In a recent ranking of all 136 programs in the FBS, USC was ranked as the No. 29 team in the country. USC Trojans Ranked No. 29 In FBS Rankings USC was placed No. 29 in CBS Sports' ranking, falling right behind SEC's Missouri Tigers. While the Trojans poor 2024 performance could have been ranked even lower, USC's progress in the offseason needs to be accounted for. Here are the teams ranked above the Trojans: 1. Texas Longhorns 2. Penn State Nittany Lions 3. Ohio State Buckeyes 4. Clemson Tigers 5. Georgia Bulldogs 6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 7. Oregon Ducks 8. Alabama Crimson Tide 9. LSU Tigers 10. Miami Hurricanes 11. Arizona State Sun Devils 12. Florida Gators 13. Illinois Fighting Illini 14. Kansas State Wildcats 15. Michigan Wolverines 16. South Carolina Gamecocks 17. SMU Mustangs 18. Texas A M Aggies 19. Iowa State Cyclones 20. Tennessee Volunteers 21. Texas Tech Red Raiders 22. Ole Miss Rebels 23. Indiana Hoosiers 24. Oklahoma Sooners 25. Utah Utes 26. Baylor Bears 27. Louisville Cardinals 28. Missouri Tigers 29. USC Trojans While majority of the teams listed have proven talent and forged a playoff-caliber season, some could argue teams like Utah should not be ranked as high. The Utes finished their 2024 campaign 6-7 with a seven-game lose streak. USC might not have much to argue with their one extra win, however, their scores and opponents speak heavily on the competition difference both programs. The Trojans finished 2024 7-6 and 4-5 in their first Big Ten conference season. No, it's not their best record or most desired results, but the statistics on paper show that USC has the potential to compete, but not enough was done. USC went 1-5 in one-score games, five fourth-quarter mishaps that could have been resolved into wins. A flip from the losses to wins could prove their dominance in the Big Ten and be the USC Trojans they used to be in the past years. The Trojans secured wins over two SEC opponents to start and end the year, USC defeated LSU in a comeback win in the Model Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas for their season opener, and returned to Las Vegas and defeated Texas A M in the Las Vegas Bowl to close out their season. The Trojans Must Capitalize in One-Score Situations College Football analysts have noticed the dire need to capitalize in one-score situations, especially after dropping multiple last season. Joel Klatt believes if the Trojans can find a solution, they could very-well be a first time College Football Playoff competitor. “They’ve got tough games against Oregon on the road. Don’t think that they’re going to win that one. So now you’re just talking about like, can you steal a victory here or there,” Klatt said on an episode of the Joel Klatt Show. “At Notre Dame is going to be difficult. But again, those close losses could turn into close wins this year, and if they do, they could be a team making their very first playoff appearance.” USC's schedule is deemed as favorable, but will face some of their toughest opponents on the road including Notre Dame, Oregon, and a rising favorite in Illinois. After this year's Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas and the start of fall camp, the Trojans and coaching staff have only nodded to their positive progress to their roster. Roster Improvements are Paving a Path for Success Coach Lincoln Riley pointed out quarterback Jayden Maiava's impressive progress that has proved his leadership and readiness to take on the starting quarterback position. “I think he would say he feels like it’s his team,” Riley told the Media after a fall camp practice. “I think he knows the guys better, he knows what he’s doing as a player better....We challenged him as coaches pretty heavily...He's responded." Coinciding with the offensive progress, positive reinforcement has also arrived on defense. The addition of linebackers coach Rob Ryan and defensive analyst Adrian Klemm only bolster the Trojans coaching staff alongside defensive D'Anton Lynn in his second year leading USC' Linebacker Eric Gentry, the leader and veteran of his position group, suffered multiple concusions all last season and saw few snaps. Defensive back Maliki Crawford missed all of last season and defensive end Anthony Lucas was ruled out all season. While USC may not have not displayed top-25 ranked talent last season, college football fans should not count them out this season, especially with their rapid progress made in the offseason.
