Combat sports often leave athletes with more than just a win or a loss. These five fighters proved their resilience after sustaining severe facial injuries. Many female combat sports athletes have shown incredible power and resilience by overcoming numerous injuries and severe health issues.
This article will talk about 5 such female combat athletes who left a mark in the world of boxing by overcoming all the disfigurement.
The first name on the list is Cheyenne Hanson. The German fighter sustained a severe hematoma during the fight with Alina Zaitseva in 2021.
The injury left her face swollen. However, later she shared her before-and-after pics, showing a speedy recovery.
Next on the list is Miriam Gutierrez, who was on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley. During the 2021 fight, the Spanish fighter took 236 punches to the face, which went viral instead of the YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul.
Gutierrez was punched by her opponent, Amanda Serrano, who has 9 major world titles across 7 distinct weight classes. After that fight, Gutierrez’s fans grew worried. However, through an Instagram post, she said she was recovering quickly.
Gutierrez added, “I never give up !!! I’m fine !!!! Very well !….”.
The 3rd name in the list is Australian boxer Ebanie Bridges. The incident occurred in April 2021, when Bridges fought Shannon Courtenay. During that fight, Bridges sustained a severe injury.
The 2 boxers met as part of the undercard for Conor Benn’s WBA continental title defense against Samuel Vargas at the Copper Box.
Bridges showed her power during the game when, after commenting that she was unable to see with her eyes, she continued fighting.
Thankfully, Bridges overcame the disfigurement and then defeated many fighters, including Mailys Gangloff and Bec Connolly.
In March 2020, Jedrzejczyk made headlines for the severe facial swelling she sustained after her fight with Weili Zhang at UFC 248.
At the final battle, the Polish fighter, who is in her 30s, was totally unrecognizable, and Jedrzejczyk’s forehead swelled to twice its normal size.
However, later in the month, in an Instagram post, she admitted that her recovery was progressing quickly.
Jedrzejczyk even posted an image just 18 days after the fight, when she looked nearly as normal as before.
So, the next on the list is the opponent who defeated Jedrzejczyk and left her with a brutal injury. However, Zhang also did not escape disfigurement.
At the same match, where Zhang won the fight on the 2 judges’ cards by 48-47, she suffered a fair amount of bruising. She was even sent to medical suspension for 2 months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and made a speedy recovery.
