Dorian Yates recently took his followers down memory lane and talked fondly about his time competing actively in the sport, where he shared the stage with several other legends like Ronnie Coleman and Kevin Levrone.

On May 6, Yates took to Instagram to send his fans on a nostalgia trip by sharing a carousel of snaps from his consecutive Mr. Olympia victories from 1992 to 1997. But besides those pictures, he also had a few things to share about that era and how some of the things/athletes resonate even today.

In a long caption that started with him praising the competition during that time, Yates said, “The level of competition and the standard of physiques were phenomenal. We had guys like; Kevin Levrone, Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray, Nasser El Sonbaty, Paul Dillet, Chris Cormier, Lee Labrada, plus Ronnie Coleman and Lee Priest were coming through too.”

He continued by saying that most of the top 6 guys during that time could easily win Mr. Olympia today, as they set a high standard with their performance. Talking about himself, Yates revealed that he planned his entire routine beforehand, so much so that it almost felt like a military campaign.

“My goal was to improve each year, to see how far I could go and truly push myself in all aspects of the sport. But each year was different and presented challenges, some with injuries that were out of my control, but I was able to adapt and do my best.”

The six-time Mr. Olympia often shares pictures from his bodybuilding days, reminiscing about the glory of that time. A few weeks ago, he shared an old clip from 1993 from his dungeon gym in Birmingham. In the video, he was seen flexing in front of the camera and showing off the physique that gave dread to many competitors of that time.

Being a legendary bodybuilder comes with a knowledge of the craft and watching it change as time goes by. Over the years, Dorian Yates has also had some opinions about modern bodybuilding that he hasn’t been afraid to put out.

Dorian Yates’ Take on Modern Bodybuilders

In the caption, Dorian Yates mentioned that many of the competitors of his time could easily win Mr. Olympia today, and that’s because of elements he notices in bodybuilders today.

For example, a few weeks ago, Yates criticized the physiques of modern bodybuilders.  Comparing them with legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lee Haney, Yates believes that modern bodybuilding standards have been watered down.

“If you talk about the guys that are Mr. Olympia now and you show that to members of the public and tell them that’s the ultimate male physique, well, hold on, he’s only like five-foot-four or something, isn’t he? He’s like a fridge. How is that possible?”

He added, “This is the best male physique in the world, six-foot-four, with wide shoulders and a small waist. You look at Arnold or Lee Haney. Wow, I get it. That’s the ultimate male physique.”

While bodybuilding has evolved, there have been times which showed that change isn’t always for the better.
