The internet has its teeth clenched after a bloodcurdling freak gym accident from 2022 resurfaced online.
The video footage, recently reposted by Bem Estar na Capital on Instagram, showed the chilling moment when a weightlifter attempted a clean & jerk with a weight beyond his capacity.
While he lifted the barbell to his chest without much difficulty, that’s when he began losing control. By the time he finished the jerk, the overwhelming weight wobbled, landing right over his neck with a terrifying bounce, dropping him to the ground in agony.
The weightlifter was rushed to a hospital in Fortaleza, with local reports stating that he needed surgery for the spinal damage. One comment further clarified that the 26-year-old athlete wasn’t permanently paralyzed, even though he hasn’t completely recovered from the incident yet.
The unnerving macabre incident that took place at Box Colosso, a gym in Fortaleza, Brazil, sent chills down the spines of online viewers, standing as a cautionary tale that the internet will never live down.
The gym’s official statement read: “The Box Colosso family, in solidarity with the MCSX student, through this message, wishes strength.”
Unfortunately, freak accidents like this aren’t rare occurrences, with multiple reports recording incidents where things go fatally wrong.
Only last year, an amateur weightlifter, Ronald Montenegro, lost his life to a sickening barbell press accident. CCTV footage showed the 55-year-old hitting the bench press when the barbell slipped out of his hands and crashed right down onto his chest.
Before the workers and the gym trainers could rush to his help, Montenegro, who had managed to free himself from under the weight, collapsed onto the ground in agonizing pain.
Medical help was sought, and the Olinda museum manager was taken to a nearby health center. However, all of this was to no avail, as doctors stated that nothing could be done to save the beloved dad of two.
The incident took place on a seemingly ordinary Monday, in another colonial town in Brazil. However, the unpremeditated accident stands as proof of the risks of weightlifting when done without proper supervision or safety measures.
