Boston entered play on September 3 just two and a half games — which now stands at three and a half — behind the Blue Jays for first in the AL East. The Sox rolled through August thanks in large part to rookie Roman Anthony. However, Boston may not have Anthony’s services again this season.
Yesterday, the Red Sox pulled outfielder Roman Anthony from Boston’s contest against the Guardians. On September 3, Alex Cora and the Red Sox confirmed that Anthony’s regular season is likely over.
Anthony was placed on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain. The rookie outfielder stated he believes he has a Grade 2 strain — he underwent an MRI early on September 3 — and Cora said his injury typically comes with a four to six week recovery.
Over his last 28 games, Anthony paced Boston’s offense. He slashed .309/.389/.509 (.898 OPS) with six home runs.
Dodgers two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani was in Los Angeles’ starting lineup on September 3. However, he did not pitch as originally scheduled.
Ohtani was passed in favor of Emmet Sheehan thanks to an illness, or what manager Dave Roberts stated was a “deep cough.” Roberts said Ohtani was good enough to hit but not work on the mound.
Astros pitcher Spencer Arrighetti was placed on the 15-day IL with elbow inflammation. It’s retroactive to August 31. He won’t be eligible to return until mid-September.
Additionally, the Astros transferred left-hander John Rooney to the 60-day IL.
Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia threw a scoreless inning for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Vesia struck out one.
Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson went 1-3 with a home run for Louisville (AAA). Stephenson was the Bats’ starting catcher and played the first seven innings.
Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez went 1-4 for Syracuse (AAA) with a home run. He played the entire game. Jose Siri went 1-4 with two RBI in that game, as well.
Brewers reliever Shelby Miller was placed on the 60-day IL with a UCL sprain. Miller stated he will likely need Tommy John surgery, the second time he would undergo the procedure.
In other injury-related news for the Brewers, Christian Yelich was scratched from the team’s game on September 3 with a back injury.
Philadelphia placed reliever Daniel Robert on the 15-day IL with a right forearm strain.
Angels pitcher Victor Mederos was transferred to the 60-day IL. Mederos, placed on the IL in late August, is done for 2025.
Victor Caratini (Astros) was activated off the injured list.
