It’s playoff time across Major League Baseball. With less than 24 hours before the Wild Card round, we received multiple updates on how injuries are affecting the Red Sox heading into their three-game set with the Yankees. Alex Bregman will be available — but Lucas Giolito won’t be.

Updates on Red Sox’s injuries

The Red Sox did not play Alex Bregman over the last two games of the 2025 season, as Bregman was dealing with an illness. Craig Breslow confirmed that Bregman will be available for Boston in the Wild Card round.

However, Lucas Giolito won’t be on the team’s roster against the Yankees. Giolito is dealing with an elbow injury. He would have been lined up to start Game 3 behind Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello.

Liam Hendriks, meanwhile, underwent season-ending surgery on his elbow. Hendriks had a ulnar nerve transposition surgery on his right elbow.

Assuming Hendriks doesn’t return to Boston in 2026, he only made 14 appearances with the team across two seasons. He missed all of 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Burger to undergo wrist surgery

Rangers infielder Jake Burger will require surgery on the torn tendon sheath of his left wrist. Per Burger, he suffered the injury in August.

Burger hit .236 with 16 home runs in his first season with the Rangers after Texas acquired him in a substantial deal last winter from the Marlins. The right-hander slugger platooned with Rowdy Tellez down the stretch.

Alvarez needs thumb surgery

As expected, Francisco Alvarez will undergo surgery to repair the UCL sprain in his right thumb. The Mets were eliminated on the final day of the regular season but Alvarez continued to play through it over the final few weeks.

Alvarez suffered the injury in August during the Little League Classic against the Mariners.
