The 2025 MLB All-Star break ends on July 18, as teams will return for the stretch run. However, some teams looking to get back into contention will be without key players. The Guardians, Royals, and Rangers all made IL-related moves. And, several notable pitchers went on rehab assignments during the four-day break.
Texas will be without Jake Burger to start the second half. Burger was placed on the 10-day IL with a left quadriceps strain during the All-Star break. It’s his second IL stint of the season.
Rowdy Tellez, per the New York Post, will take Burger’s place on the Rangers’ roster.
There was one notable injury issue during the 2025 All-Star Game. Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez took a 96 MPH fastball from Shane Smith off his left hand during the eighth inning of the game.
Suarez did get X-rays on the hand, which came back negative.
On the last day before the All-Star break, Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick left the team’s game against the Nationals with a hamstring injury. It came after Frelick made a sliding catch in foul territory. Now, more details are known, regarding the extent of it.
The Brewers confirmed Frelick is dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Even though it’s a low-grade strain, general manager Matt Arnold stated that, as of July 16, it was undecided whether he would require an IL stint.
Just before the All-Star break, Marlins infielder Connor Norby was placed on the IL with wrist inflammation. Unfortunately for Miami, Norby will be out for much longer than just 10 days.
Norby underwent surgery for a broken left hamate bone, per MLB.com. The recovery will keep him out for six to eight weeks, leaving him on pace to return sometime in September.
Additionally, Jesus Tinoco (forearm) was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Several notable players went on rehab assignments in the complex leagues, the only leagues in play this week. All full-season leagues were off for the All-Star Game.
Jon Gray threw three innings for the ACL Rangers on July 14. Gray struck out one and conceded six hits.
Alek Manoah, for the FCL Blue Jays, gave up four runs over .1 IP on the 14th. Manoah gave up one hit and two walks.
Two former Cy Young winners faced each on July 15. Blake Snell struck out seven for the ACL Dodgers on the 15th. Opposite him was Shane Bieber, who struck out five over two scoreless frames. In that same game, Blake Treinen struck out one over one inning.
Mets pitcher Paul Blackburn struck out eight over 3.2 IP on July 17.
Royals pitcher Michael Lorenzen was placed on the 15-day IL with a left oblique strain.
Cleveland placed reliever Paul Sewald on the injured list with a right shoulder strain.
The Athletics transferred Grant Holman (shoulder) to the 60-day IL.
Rob Brantly (Marlins) & Blake Perkins (Brewers) were activated off the injured list.
