Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke on October 16 and provided updates on several injured players from the team. Among those included was an update on Aaron Judge’s elbow, plus surgery confirmations for Carlos Rodon and Anthony Volpe.
Boone stated that Gerrit Cole is progressing well. He’ll be doing de-load work and then meet with his surgeon in November, per the Yankees manager.
As for a potential return, Boone added that while Cole is doing well and on track, he won’t be ready to return for Opening Day. The belief, for now, is that Cole will be on a mound during Spring Training and be back shortly after Opening Day.
Cole had his surgery early last spring after going down in Spring Training. At the time, it was expected he would be back before the 2026 All-Star break.

Carlos Rodon had surgery on his elbow to remove loose bodies and shave down a bone spur, per Boone. Rodon will not throw for eight weeks and is expected to ramp up in December.
Boone believes that, given the delay, he will likely be unavailable heading into the start of the 2026 campaign.
"…Everything went well yesterday…he'll start his ramping up in the middle of December."

Clarke Schmidt is 14 weeks past his Tommy John surgery, per Boone. Boone believes he’ll begin his throwing program in mid-December.
However, Schmidt, who had the operation during the summer, won’t be an option until the second half of the 2026 campaign.
Lastly, the Yankees confirmed that Anthony Volpe had left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. As noted throughout September, the team stated that Volpe was playing through a shoulder injury.
Volpe won’t swing a bat for four months and won’t be able to dive on the shoulder for six months.
Amidst all of that news, the Yankees confirmed that Aaron Judge won’t need surgery after he hurt his flexor tendon in July.
Judge missed two weeks of the 2025 campaign with the injury and was limited to DH for a brief period before returning to the field.
