It was an active day of injury news on July 30. Zach Eflin and Tyler Mahle, two notable trade targets, were both placed on the injured list. And for Mahle, he won’t be back until at least August. Additionally, the Astros and Blue Jays are dealing with mounting injuries.
A key trade target landed on the IL just before the calendar shifted to July.
Orioles pitcher Zach Eflin was placed on the injured list with back discomfort, retroactive to June 29. Two days ago, Eflin gave up five hits and four earned runs against the Rays before leaving with the aforementioned back issue.
Eflin, who’s a free agent after 2025, would be an attractive trade target for a contending team.
As for the AL West-leading Astros, Houston will be without Jeremy Pena for a bit.
Pena, who exited the Astros’ game on June 27 after being hit by a pitch in his ribs, was placed on the IL with a small rib fracture on his left side.
General manager Dana Brown said Pena will be fully shut down and if the pain subsides in a week, Houston can contemplate whether he can resume baseball activities.
Texas will be without Tyler Mahle through the 2025 trade deadline, as the right-hander is dealing with a rotator cuff strain. The news was confirmed by the team today.
Like Eflin, Mahle was a name to watch heading into July. Mahle posted a 2.34 ERA over his first 77 innings and limited well-hit contact (7.6% Barrel%).
On a more positive note, the Rangers stated Wyatt Langford will come off the injured list this weekend against the Padres.
The Blue Jays lost two players on June 30, at least for the moment. Bo Bichette didn’t play on the 30th thanks to back pain, while George Springer left the Yankees-Blue Jays’ game after a collision at third base with Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Aside from those two issues, the Jays provided updates in Yimi Garcia & Anthony Santander.
For Garcia, he’s expected back in “the next day or two,” per general manager Ross Atkins. As for Santander, he suffered a partial separation in his left shoulder back in May. However, he’s expected to start swinging a bat soon.
Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo faced six batters in the FCL on June 30. Oviedo struck out one but gave up three hits and two earned runs over 0.2 IP.
The Giants placed Casey Schmitt on the 10-day IL with left hand inflammation. It’s retroactive to June 27.
Fernando Cruz was placed on the 15-day IL by the Yankees on June 30, retroactive to June 28. Cruz is deadling with a left oblique strain.
Reds reliever Ian Gibaut was placed on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder impingement. The move is retroactive to June 29.
Jordan Hicks (Red Sox), Bryce Harper (Phillies), and Shea Langeliers (Athletics) were activated off the injured list.
