2025 Injury Report: Updates on Festa, Garcia, Pepiot

The Rays are protecting Ryan Pepiot with less than three weeks to go, as he was scratched from his scheduled start on September 10. That was one of several injury-related notes on the day, which also included updates on Luis Garcia and David Festa.

Pepiot scratched versus White Sox

Griffin Jax was the opener for the Rays on September 10, as scheduled starter Ryan Pepiot was scratched with general fatigue.

Pepiot stated that he didn’t feel right this week, hence the move. The good news for the Rays is that Pepiot believes he will pitch again this season.

The Rays right-hander has thrown 163 innings this season, a career-high.

Garcia back on IL

The Astros placed pitcher Luis Garcia on the 15-day IL with right elbow discomfort.

Garcia suffered the injury during his start on September 9 against the Blue Jays. It was Garcia’s second start since coming back from Tommy John surgery. He missed all of 2024 (sans two MiLB appearances), and most of 2023 — when he had the surgery — before returning last week.

Festa may have nerve issue in shoulder

Twins pitcher David Festa has already been ruled out for the rest of this season. However, the sophomore Major Leaguer may have more problems to contend with.

Festa met with Dr. Keith Meister in Texas, and Meister believes that Festa is dealing with neurological thoracic outlet syndrome. The Twins righty will get checked out by vascular surgeon Gregory Pearl before both he and the team can plan out his rehab.

Neurological TOS is not the same as venous, the less concerning one that hit Zack Wheeler earlier this year.

Festa posted a 5.40 ERA across 53.1 IP this season.

Rehab assignments

The Cardinals had three Major Leaguers rehab with Springfield (AA). John King struck out two and gave up one run in one inning. Brendan Donovan, playing second, went 0-3 with a strikeout before being pulled for a sub. Nolan Arenado, the DH, went 0-3 with a strikeout.

Tigers reliever Paul Sewald struck out one in one inning for Toledo (AAA).

Orioles C/DH Gary Sanchez went 2-3 with a home run for Norfolk (AAA). Tyler O’Neill went 1-4 with a home run in the same game.

Other injury news

Padres infielder Xander Bogaerts has been cleared to resume baseball activities.

Cardinals infielder Masyn Winn is playing through a torn meniscus, per the team.

Tommy Edman (Dodgers), Jameson Taillon (Cubs), and Miguel Vargas (White Sox) were activated off the injured list.
