The managerial carousel continued on October 13, as the Padres’ job opened up. Mike Shildt, who helped lead the Padres to playoff berths in 2024 & 2025, retired. Thus, the Padres will look for yet another manager.
On October 13, the Padres announced that Mike Shildt had retired, opening up yet another managerial position. It ends Shildt’s two-year run as Padres manager.
Thank you for your many contributions to the Padres organization and the San Diego community, Mike.

Overall, it was a strong run for the Padres while Shidt was the leader on the San Diego bench. The Padres had back-to-back 90-win seasons, making the playoffs in both seasons after failing to do so in 2023. Shildt will also finish as the Padres’ all-time leader in winning percentage (.565), surpassing Jack McKeon (.541).
His last games as manager came during the 2025 NL Wild Card round.
In a statement, AJ Preller thanked Shildt for his contributions throughout four seasons with the organization. He worked in player development before moving to the manager position.
Shildt, before joining the Padres, was manager for parts of four seasons as the Cardinals’ manager. His run saw Shildt, who took over from Mike Matheny mid-season, lead the Cardinals to three playoff berths, an NL Central title in 2019, and an NLCS berth in 2019.
Now, the Padres must look for their fourth manager since 2020. Jayce Tingler, Bob Melvin, and Shildt each spent two seasons with the franchise as manager.
The Tigers confirmed during the end-of-season presser that manager A.J. Hinch had his contract extended during the 2025 season, keeping him around for the immediate future.
Hinch will enter his sixth season as Tigers manager come 2026. He joined the franchise in 2021, and since then, he has seen Detroit transition from rebuilder to contender.
Detroit has made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, falling in the ALDS on both occasions.
