2025 Transactions: Giants, Royals Swap Mason Black & Logan Martin

Another day, another trade for the Royals. Kansas City acquired pitcher Mason Black, a former third-round pick recently DFA’d by the Giants, in a trade with San Francisco. The Royals sent pitcher Logan Martin, currently playing in the Arizona Fall League, to the Giants as part of the deal.

What the Royals get

Mason Black worked 10 games across two seasons with the Giants at the MLB level. He hasn’t had much success at the MLB level, though, as he owns a career ERA of 6.47.

Black possesses a sneaky four-seam fastball, one that netted a Whiff% north of 30% at the Triple-A level. Low-arm slot, also uses a sinker, changeup, and low-80s sweeper that plays off the four-seamer. Black isn’t a big velocity pitcher; it ranges in the 92-96 MPH range.

Walks were a problem for Black with Sacramento (AAA) last season. The right-hander walked 62 over 119 innings for the River Cats.

The Giants burned two options on the 25-year-old Black.

Black became yet another addition for the Royals this winter. On November 10, the Royals acquired Kameron Misner from the Rays via trade.

What the Giants get

New Giants pitcher Logan Martin was a 12th-round pick out of the University of Kentucky two years ago. He’s worked almost exclusively as a starting pitcher in 2024 and 2025.

Martin struck out 97 batters over 102 innings in Low-A back in 2024. This past year with High-A Quad Cities, Martin struck out 78 over 91.1 IP, and opposing batters hit just .223 off him. However, he hasn’t put up great numbers in the Arizona Fall League this season. Martin walked eight and gave up 16 earned runs over 11 innings with Surprise.

Martin, the right-hander, has a 92-96 MPH four-seam fastball and two-seamer, coupled with a cutter, mid-70s curveball, and mid-80s changeup.
