It remains relatively quiet across the MLB transactions front, even though there have been plenty of rumors floating around thus far. Nonetheless, there’s been some action. The Reds added catching depth on November 12, adding World Series champion Ben Rortvedt off waivers. Detroit, meanwhile, cut bait with ex-closer Alex Lange.
The Reds claimed catcher Ben Rortvedt, ending his tenure with the Dodgers. It was a successful one, as the former Tampa Bay Ray won a World Series with the organization.
Rortvedt was added to the 40-man roster in September after Will Smith went down to injury. He wound up playing 22 total games for the Dodgers, four of which came in the playoffs. Rortvedt hit .429 in the postseason.
He’ll become the fourth catcher on the Reds’ 40-man roster. Cincinnati’s 40-man roster also includes Jose Trevino, Tyler Stephenson, and Will Banfield.
Additionally, the Dodgers outrighted Tony Gonsolin to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Gonsolin, who has over five years of MLB experience, was able to reject it and head to free agency.
The Detroit Tigers designated Alex Lange for assignment. It’s a move that opened up a 40-man roster spot. Additionally, the Tigers claimed Dugan Darnell off waivers from the Pirates.
Lange was at one point the closer for the Tigers. The 30-year-old, who’s leaned heavily on his shortened-up knuckle-curve, notched 26 saves two years ago for Detroit. However, he lost the job to Jason Foley in 2024 and was optioned to Triple-A later that season. He only appeared in one game for the Tigers this season.
He traditionally leveraged that pitch in upwards of 50-60%. However, that usage rate dropped to 43% in 2025 with the Mud Hens. Aside from injuries, what hasn’t worked in his favor is command; Lange walked 14 over 23.1 IP with Toledo, and it’s been a problem throughout his career.
Darnell, a 28-year-old right-hander, made his MLB debut in 2025 with the Pirates. High arm slot, low-to-mid-90s fastball.
The Rays released infielder Bob Seymour. Per the team, it was to allow Seymour to pursue a foreign professional opportunity. Seymour saw 83 plate appearances with the Rays this season, with a slash line of .205/.253/.282 last season. The 27-year-old hit 30 home runs with Triple-A Durham this past year.
And for those who missed the news, veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski‘s playing days are officially over. Jankowski joined the Rangers as their new first base coach.
