Identifying early breakout hitters for 2026 fantasy baseball can make a measurable difference in whether you win your league. While we’re dealing with small samples thus far, the underlying statistics can indicate the way things are trending.
Through 49 PA Walker is batting .295/.367/.682 with 10 R, 12 RBI, 5 HR, and 1 SB. He still strikes out too much (28.6% K%), but there he’s showing some improvement in his plate discipline with a 10.2% walk rate. After hitting 16 HR in his rookie 2023 season, many analysts predicted a breakout coming due to his mix of bat speed and power.
Technically, 2025 was Baldwin’s breakout year. However, he’s showing an uptick in power early and his contact skills seem improved as well. Baldwin is batting .321/.390/.623 with 12 R, 15 RBI, and 5 HR. He’s not selling out contact for power and his elite bat speed and barrel rate have him primed for a big power season.
Smith is showing the power/speed skills to put together a 20/20 season. He’s off to a great start so far, batting .271/.385/.523 with 9 R, 6 RBI, 3 HR and 3 SB. The 26.9% strikeout rate could surely show some improvement but he’s walking at a 13.5% rate. Both are already improvements over his 2025 numbers.
Walker spent the winter at Driveline reworking his swing after two terrible seasons at the plate in which he was unable to draw on his raw power. The change to a higher launch angle and adding a couple of ticks to his already elite bat speed has brought positive changes. His average exit velocity is up nearly 5 MPH and his hard hit rate has soared, as has his barrel rate. His Statcast page reflects these changes.
Oddly, many of Baldwin’s Statcast numbers are slightly down from last season, but not by enough to worry about. It’s really just a continuation of what he was already doing well. He puts the ball in play, doesn’t strike out often and is willing to take walks that are handed to him. He is barreling the ball up better and his launch angle sweet spot has improved. Baldwin is pulling the ball more often to his pull side, which explains the power outburst in the early season.
Smith’s gains are less obvious to discern. He’s made slight gains in hard hit rate and overall fly ball rate with the change in his launch angle. Smith has also raised his bat speed to 73.3 MPH. He’s crushing fastballs but still struggles with breaking and offspeed pitches.
Baldwin is widely owned in Yahoo leagues, but Walker and Smith are available in roughly 40% of leagues. Walker should be added, and Smith stashed, in leagues where on waivers. Baldwin and Walker certainly should be trade targets for fantasy managers where possible.
Since we’re dealing with a small sample, it’s a good idea to monitor a few things with each hitter. Baldwin is pretty much a known quantity, so it’s really about him continuing to crush the ball. If he can do so consistently, he has 25-30 HR potential. Walker’s strikeout rate and lack of pulled balls could limit his power, and he should be considered a work in progress. Watch out for a slump due to his contact issues. Smith’s early power could be a mirage if he doesn’t start pulling the ball more often in the air. There is also a fair amount of swing and miss in his game. Monitor his strikeout rate, especially in points leagues.
