2026 Injury Report: Updates on Contreras, Kurtz, Dingler

Yet again, it wasn’t a great day for some of the 2026 All-Stars. Several players scheduled to go to Philadelphia left games either due to injury or illness. Plus, several big bats for NL West teams were out of their clubs’ respective lineups.

Kurtz removed from game

Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz was removed after one at-bat on July 8.

Kurtz is dealing with an illness.

Dingler exits

Also, in that Athletics-Tigers game, catcher Dillon Dingler was removed after his right hand was hit by a foul ball from Jacob Wilson.

X-rays on Dingler’s hand came back negative.

Contreras left with foot injury

On the same day that he declared for the 2026 Home Run Derby, Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras left in Boston’s game against the Red Sox due to a foot contusion. Contreas fouled a 90 MPH changeup off his left foot in the third inning.

After the game, Contreras indicated that he believes it’s just a bruise.

Machado not in lineup

Padres third baseman Manny Machado did not start against the Diamondbacks on July 8.

Machado fouled a ball off his foot on the 7th, and manager Craig Stammen indicated that X-rays came back negative.

IL moves

Padres outfielder Samad Taylor was placed on the 10-day IL with an oblique injury.

Giants rookie Jonah Cox was placed on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain, retroactive to July 6.

Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez was placed on the 10-day IL with a left glute strain, retroactive to July 7.

Mets reliever Austin Warren was placed on the 15-day IL with a right forearm strain.

Twins pitcher Marco Raya was placed on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder impingement, retroactive to July 5.

Phillies pitcher Lou Trivino went on the 15-day IL with a right thoracic muscle spasm.

Rehab assignments

Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer struck out five over four innings (72 pitches) for Triple-A Buffalo, a start where he allowed six hits and four earned runs. Scherzer averaged 93 MPH and topped out at 94 MPH.

Nationals starter Trevor Williams struck out two over 2.2 scoreless innings (38 pitches) for Triple-A Rochester.

Cubs reliever Phil Maton struck out three over 1.2 IP for Triple-A Iowa.

White Sox 1B Munetaka Murakami went 1-4 with an RBI for Triple-A Charlotte.

Royals 1B Vinnie Pasquantino went 0-3 with two walks for Triple-A Omaha.

Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena went 0-3 with a strikeout for Triple-A Sugar Land.

Mets outfielder Luis Robert Jr. went 2-4 with a strikeout for Double-A Binghamton.

Other notes

Hunter Goodman (hand) was out of the Rockies’ starting lineup on July 8.

Giants third baseman Matt Chapman indicated that he has not made any progress in his recovery from an abdominal strain (h/t California Post).
