2026 Injury Report: Updates on Fried, Snell, Westburg

It was a busy day on the injury front for May 15. Blake Snell and Max Fried, two of the best left-handers in the game, both went on the injured list. Jordan Westburg is done for the year, while the Tigers provided an update on Tarik Skubal.

Snell out again

Yet again, Blake Snell is on the IL. The left-hander was placed there on May 15 with loose bodies on his left elbow.

Snell threw just three innings in his lone start at the MLB level this season on May 9.

Fried dealing with bone bruise

The Yankees announced that left-hander Max Fried will go on the IL with a bone bruise in his left elbow. This news comes days after he was removed from his start against the Orioles due to an elbow problem.

Fried will be shut down for a few weeks before more imaging is done on his elbow.

Westburg done for 2026

Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg will undergo season-ending UCL reconstruction surgery. It will keep him out for the rest of the 2026 season.

It ends what has been over three months of uncertainty regarding Westburg. The Orioles infielder was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in February and was originally scheduled to be out until at least May. Now, add a few more months to that timeline.

IL moves

Rockies pitcher Chase Dollander was placed on the IL with an elbow strain.

Padres pitcher Matt Waldron was placed on the injured list with a right brachialis muscle injury.

Rehab assignments

Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena resumed his rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi. He went 0-5 with three strikeouts.

Red Sox reliever Danny Coulombe tossed a scoreless inning for Double-A Portland.

Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar went 1-1 with a home run for Low-A Palm Beach.

Other notes

Mets pitcher Clay Holmes suffered a fractured fibula in his start versus the Yankees.

Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal has begun a throwing program, per manager A.J. Hinch.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider indicated that Jose Berrios could need surgery as he attempts to recover from an elbow injury. He met with well-known physician Keith Meister earlier this week.

Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos was removed from his team’s game against the Athletics due to right quad tightness.

Byron Buxton (hip) and Christian Yelich (back) were out on May 15.

Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. took batting practice on May 15. He won’t be activated until he can play the field, per manager Walt Weiss.
