The New York Mets must have already felt so embarrassed after the 2025 season considering how they sputtered towards the end of it, leading to them missing the postseason entirely. Heading into the 2026 campaign, the Mets were feeling confident, as despite losing Pete Alonso to the Baltimore Orioles and Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, they brought in Bo Bichette following an excellent season with the World Series runner-up Toronto Blue Jays.
They also improved their infield defense by bringing in Marcus Semien, and they signed former New York Yankee Devin Williams to a reasonable contract to help replace Diaz. But no one in the Mets organization could have foreseen that they would be this bad this season.
At present, the Mets have a 40-57 record, giving them the fourth-worst win-loss tally in the big leagues at the halfway mark of the season. This is nothing short of a catastrophe for the team with the second-highest payroll in MLB, and Jon Heyman aptly called this year a disaster for the franchise.
“It’s a disaster. … They need to sell, obviously. They are terrible. … I did have them winning the division. That’s not too good. They’re a very bad team,” Heyman said on The Show with Joel Sherman.
"Stearns gets an F for this year. He's going to need an A+ to turn this around."@JonHeyman says the Mets need a solid trade deadline to build towards next season.

There doesn’t seem to be enough superlatives to describe how poorly the Mets have performed in 2026. It hasn’t helped whatsoever that the team has suffered through a plethora of injury problems that has made it basically impossible for them to compete.
Francisco Lindor has missed plenty of time this year with an injury. Semien, Luis Robert Jr., and Mark Vientos are currently on the injured list. Clay Holmes suffered a freak injury. Bichette has vastly underperformed this season and he recently missed a game for the Mets due to a lower-body injury.
Suffice to say, the 2026 Mets never had a chance, and now, a fire sale might be what’s next for this floundering franchise.
