The Padres were able to snap their losing streak on July 5, one of several storylines to come out of the weekend. The Mets and Marlins also picked up on the day, adventurous ones at that.
The Mets won 10-9 on July 5, as New York (NL) notched the first win in their four-game series against the Braves. But the Mets narrowly avoided a major collapse.
It was a big day for the Mets’ offense, highlighted by home runs from A.J. Ewing and Tyrone Taylor, plus a two-run double from Bo Bichette in the ninth that mattered significantly.
Huascar Brazoban conceded five earned runs over 0.1 innings. Drake Baldwin hit a grand slam off Brazoban, which eventually prompted Devin Williams to come in and pick up the final two outs.
The Marlins won 9-8 against the Athletics on July 5, a game that nearly went horribly wrong for Miami.
It was a great day for the Marlins’ offense, highlighted by Leo Jimenez‘s first home run with the team, two from Heriberto Hernandez, and a solo shot from Otto Lopez in the ninth that became a pivotal run for Miami.
Eury Perez tossed seven perfect innings against the A’s. Lake Bachar came in the eighth but he didn’t get a single out, as he was responsible for all five runs scored that inning. Pete Fairbanks allowed three runs (two ER) in the ninth.
Still, it was a victory for the Marlins, who will head home with a 49-42 record.
The Twins will return home with a series victory over the Yankees, as Minnesota won 6-1 to take the series from New York (AL).
It was a 12-hit day for the Twins, as Minnesota was able to knock Yankees starter Ryan Weathers out after four. Brooks Lee had three hits, while Austin Martin and Royce Lewis each had two. Those three combined for four RBI.
Joe Ryan struck out nine over seven shutout innings.
Solo home runs from Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker were enough for the Astros to complete a 2-0 victory.
Peter Lambert continued his impressive season, as he struck out six over 5.2 scoreless innings. He picked up his seventh win of the 2026 season.
The Padres snapped an eight-game losing streak and defeated the Dodgers 5-2, salvaging the final game of the two teams’ series in Los Angeles.
A four-run seventh was the difference here for the Padres. Fernando Tatis Jr. gave the Padres a 2-0 lead in the seventh via an RBI single. Manny Machado hit his 18th home run later that inning, a three-run shot.
JP Sears struck out five over five scoreless innings.
