2026 Transactions: Athletics Claim Rodriguez, Orioles DFA Suarez

Former Cleveland outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez found yet another home on August 21, as the power-hitting outfielder was claimed by the Athletics. As for his old team, the Orioles, Baltimore designated pitcher Albert Suarez for assignment.

Athletics’ moves

The Athletics claimed outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez from the Pittsburgh Pirates and selected infielder Michael Stefanic from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Rodriguez, now 26 years of age, has bounced around team after team over the years. In the last two seasons, the Athletics are now the fourth organization he’s played for, a list that also includes the Guardians, Orioles, and Pirates. He does hit for pop, which is why Rodriguez is a popular player.

He was assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Suarez DFA’d by Orioles

The Orioles designated pitcher Albert Suarez for assignment.

Suarez, used as a starter for the early portion of his Orioles career, was used as a multi-inning reliever this season, working anywhere between one and three innings. Overall, Suarez posted a 3.93 ERA and struck out 38 over 55 innings this season.

As of August 21, he went 11 consecutive outings without allowing a home run.

Anthony Nunez (Orioles), Kade Morris (Athletics), Matthew Lugo (Royals), Jose Cuas (Royals), Max Schuemann (Yankees), Davis Schneider (Blue Jays), Ryan Fernandez (Cardinals), Kai-Wei Teng (Astros), and Paul Gervase (Dodgers) were recalled from the Minors.

Graham Pauley (Marlins), Zach Maxwell (Reds), Brendan Cellucci (Blue Jays), Taylor Rashi (Athletics), Emmet Sheehan (Dodgers), Carlos Duran (Dodgers), Adeal Amador (Rockies), and Bryan King (Astros) were optioned.

Other notes

Miami selected catcher Logan Driscoll from Triple-A Jacksonville.

The Phillies sent pitcher Brian Keller outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
