The Red Sox protected Tyler Uberstine for a reason this past winter, and now he has a chance to face Major League hitting for the first time. Uberstine was recalled from the Minors on April 3, one of several notable moves made on April 2 and 3 across the league.
Before the team’s home opener, Boston recalled pitchers Zack Kelly and Tyler Uberstine from Triple-A.
As we noted in our Red Sox farm review for 2025, Uberstine had a breakthrough year with Triple-A Worcester. That year helped Uberstine earn a spot on the 40-man roster.
The 26-year-old had a Whiff% near 30% in 2025 with the WooSox, and Uberstine has an eclectic arsenal. It includes a mid-90s fastball that got a good amount of swing-and-miss up in the zone, plus a slider, curveball, changeup, and cutter.
The Pirates officially selected the contact of Konnor Griffin on April 3, one day after the team confirmed that he would be up for the team’s home opener.
That wasn’t the only news on Griffin, as ESPN reported that both he and the Pirates were close to a nine-year extension that would keep him in the Steel City for a very long time.
Additionally, the Pirates made some other moves to realign their roster in the wake of the Griffin promotion. Billy Cook was optioned to Triple-A, while Enmanuel Valdez was designated for assignment.
The Twins acquired reliever Garrett Acton from the Marlins on April 2, in exchange for Minor League pitcher Logan Whitaker.
Acton, a 27-year-old reliever, has been a popular pitcher in terms of bouncing around the league. He’s been with the Rays, Rockies, and Marlins over the last few months. Acton was a high-strikeout pitcher in the Minors, which would largely explain that.
Whitaker spent the last few seasons in the Twins’ system. He struck out 33 over 38 innings between High-A and Double-A last season. Slightly above-average GB% (44.6%) in the Midwest League. Showed low-to-mid-90s velocity.
Blade Tidwell (Giants) and Valente Bellozo (Rockies) were recalled from Triple-A to replace injured pitchers.
The Rays promoted reliever Hunter Bigge from Durham to replace an injured Garret Cleavinger.
Steward Berroa (Brewers), Ryan Ritter (Rockies), and Ryan Bliss (Mariners) were all optioned within the last 48 hours.
Seattle released reliever Ryan Loutos.
