25 MLB prospects who could get called up this summer

There have already been a few high-profile prospects to make their MLB debuts this season. Who will be next? This is a look at 25 prospects who could soon make the jump from the minors to the majors.

Detroit's prized pitching prospect is currently plying his trade in Double-A. However, he's already made the jump from High-A this season and with the way he's started off life at his new level, it's entirely possible that he could continue his blistering pace and find himself in Detroit before the season ends.

Dakota Mekkes - Chicago Cubs

While Dakota Mekkes took Triple-A by storm last season, it's been a bit more of a challenge for him this year. Still, once he figures things out, he could end up being seen as an internal candidate to join Chicago's bullpen at some point during this season.

Forrest Whitley - Houston Astros

If this was back during the Astros' rebuilding days, Forrest Whitley would probably be up by now and taking his lumps in the bigs. Instead, he is both blessed and cursed in that he can take all the time he needs (and he needs it since he's struggling at the moment) because there isn't a spot for him to occupy yet. He could make an appearance if there's an injury outbreak, but the Astros are in no hurry to bring up Whitley.

Corey Ray - Milwaukee Brewers

Keston Hiura recently made his debut with the Milwaukee Brewers, and Corey Ray could be the next high-profile Brewers prospect to make his presence felt at the highest level. He's struggling a bit at Triple-A, but there's always a chance he could flip a switch and get on a hot streak. If that happens, it could become too much for the big league club to ignore.

Jesus Luzardo - Oakland Athletics

If Jesus Luzardo hadn't suffered a shoulder injury during the early stages of spring training, it would have been a safe bet he'd be in the Oakland Athletics rotation right now. Unfortunately, his season still has yet to get underway. Still, he should be able to pitch his way onto the big league club once he finally gets going.

Victor Victor Mesa - Miami Marlins

This is probably the biggest long shot of all to make it to the bigs this season. The Marlins just signed him but for a substantial amount of money. He wasn't signed as a "project" — the team expects him to contribute soon. Everything would have to go right for him to make it to the bigs before the season ends, but it's a possibility.

On the other hand, it wouldn't be a huge shock to see Dylan Cease in the major leagues pretty soon. He's the latest in the line of exciting White Sox prospects to come through their farm system. Cease isn't lighting the world on fire at Triple-A right now, but it still wouldn't be a big surprise to see him wearing the black pinstripes in Chicago at some point this season.

Yusniel Diaz - Baltimore Orioles

When the Orioles sent Manny Machado to Los Angeles, Yusniel Diaz was the biggest prospect to go to Baltimore. The Dodgers spent a huge amount of money to sign him, and now the Orioles could end up being the ones who profit from his skills at the major league level. If all goes well for him this season, the Orioles could decide that now is the time for him to show off what he's got when it comes to the majors.

Yordan Alvarez - Houston Astros

Just like his fellow Astros prospect Forrest Whitley, Yordan Alvarez has the luxury of not having to feel rushed while he's in the minors, as the Astros are so loaded that there aren't many open spots for him. He's currently hitting like he needs to be in the big leagues, and if he continues to tear it up with his bat, then the Astros might have to find a way to use him.

Justin Dunn - Seattle Mariners

Justin Dunn has proved that he has the stuff when it comes to his pitching repertoire, and he's also athletic enough to keep it up. The only question is when he'll put everything together. When that happens, the Mariners could find a way to use him and start to get an immediate return on the trade that brought him from the Mets.

Brent Honeywell - Tampa Bay Rays

When we last saw Brent Honeywell on the mound, he was not too far away from pitching himself into the big leagues. However, Tommy John surgery cost him a year and he has yet to make his 2019 debut. If he picks up where he left off, then his major league debut may not be too far away.

Even though first base is currently occupied by the scuffling Chris Davis and Trey Mancini, Orioles fans are dreaming of the day when Ryan Mountcastle gets his opportunity. That could be soon if he continues to hit like he has been at the Triple-A level. There may be a positional logjam, but Mountcastle could be the one to bust it up.

Dustin May - Los Angeles Dodgers

It takes a lot to turn heads at Dodgers camp as a player who hasn't even pitched in the majors yet. That's exactly what Dustin May did, and he was so impressive that even manager Dave Roberts was on the record saying he wouldn't be surprised to see May in Los Angeles at some point this season. With praise like that, May could be in the majors soon.

Nate Pearson - Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have a decent amount of exciting young talent, and Nate Pearson has been standing out in that crowd. He started this season in High-A and has been holding his own in Double-A so far. He's an exciting prospect, and there's always a decent chance that he could ride a rocket to the majors if all goes well.

Andres Gimenez - New York Mets

Andres Gimenez is not going to impress anybody with his bat. It's his glove that's gotten him this far, and it will also be his glove that carries him to the bigs. It would take a bit of an injury outbreak in the middle infield for him to get called up, but in the unfortunate event that does happen, Gimenez should at least be ready to defend those positions.

Ke'Bryan Hayes - Pittsburgh Pirates

Eighteen years after Charlie Hayes played his last major league game, his son, Ke'Bryan, could play his way into the majors and keep the family's MLB legacy going. He hasn't quite set Triple-A on fire just yet, but if things heat up for him the Pirates could bring him up sometime during this season.

Triston McKenzie - Cleveland Indians

It's been a bit of a rough start to the season for Triston McKenzie, as injury has derailed his season before it's even started. He would have been a shoo-in to make it to the bigs this season, but his injury issues have derailed his short-term development. It would take a runaway train of progress for him to make it, but he's still got the talent to make it possible.

Brendan McKay - Tampa Bay Rays

Interestingly enough, Brendan McKay probably isn't near ready to make it to the bigs as a hitter. As a pitcher, he could probably see himself in Tampa Bay's bullpen before the season is over. It's similar to what the Angels do with Shohei Ohtani in that the Rays plan on using him as a pitching/hitting hybrid, and right now his arm is ahead of his bat.

Lewis Thorpe - Minnesota Twins

Lewis Thorpe may be a long way away from Australia, but he's not too far away from the major leagues. There may be some solid competition for him to make it to the big leagues this season, and he has had a bit of a rougher start in Triple-A during this season when compared to last season. Still, he's a name that wouldn't be shocking to read on Minnesota's roster at some point later on during this season.

Keibert Ruiz - Los Angeles Dodgers

Keibert Ruiz is another long shot on this list. While Dustin May's talent has been tough for Dave Roberts to ignore in terms of bringing him up, Keibert Ruiz could be a year away from the big leagues. His 2019 arrival was also complicated with the call-up of fellow catcher Will Smith. It's a long shot, but Ruiz has also heated up considerably in Double-A after a slow start. If he keeps it up, things will get interesting soon.

Taylor Widener - Arizona Diamondbacks

Taylor Widener made Double-A his personal playground, and he was impressive during spring training as well. Unfortunately, he's received a rude welcome to Triple-A, so he may not be on the fast track that he was seemingly on even as early as March of this season. Still, he'll be given plenty of time to turn it around, and a call-up wouldn't be anything shocking.

Daz Cameron - Detroit Tigers

Daz Cameron started the 2018 season in High-A. The former Astros prospect finished last season in Triple-A. That type of progress would indicate that he's not going to stick around in the minors for a long time. He will eventually figure it out, and he'll be given a chance to carve out his own spot in Detroit.

Tommy Edman - St. Louis Cardinals

Doesn't it seem like the Cardinals always find a way to produce talented players and bring them up with little-to-no fanfare? Tommy Edman could be the latest example of that. He had a strong start in Triple-A near the end of last season, and he has picked up exactly where he left off. He can play plenty of positions as well, and that's always tantalizing for big league teams.

Brock Burke - Texas Rangers
Jayne Kamin / Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

While there may have been a pitching logjam in Tampa Bay's organization, a change of scenery could do a lot of good for Brock Burke. The organizational change alone could accelerate Brock's progress toward the bigs, even if he hasn't exactly picked things up so far in 2019. He's proved that he can make it through a system quickly, and he could complete his journey at some point this season.

Bo Bichette - Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays are not done bringing up legacy talent from their minor league system. Bo Bichette could soon join Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Cavan Biggio soon. The Blue Jays could choose to play the service time game, in which case we won't see him until next season. However, if Toronto wants to kick the youth movement into high gear, Bichette could eventually play his way onto the big league roster this season, and the trial by fire would really be underway.
