A new Braves prospect arm is demanding immediate attention

Despite being taken in the fourth round, nobody received a larger signing bonus in last year’s draft class than 18-year-old Briggs McKenzie — who chose to sign with the Braves over honoring his commitment to LSU.

McKenzie didn’t make his professional debut until a few weeks ago in the Florida Complex League, but he’s quickly become a prospect worth paying close attention to. In his first appearance for the Augusta Green Jackets on Friday, he tossed five shutout innings with eight strikeouts, allowing just one hit.

Beyond the stat line, the poise and stuff jumped off the page — a magnificent changeup, curveball, and fastball from the left side.

It was impressive enough that the Braves immediately promoted him to High-A Rome after just one start.

I’ve followed Braves prospects for a long time, and I can’t remember the last time the organization saw one start from an 19-year-old and decided it was enough to immediately promote him to High-A. This is an arm the Braves are clearly extraordinarily high on — and have been since the draft, when they handed him a $3 million signing bonus.

MLB.com currently has McKenzie as the Braves’ sixth-ranked prospect, but that might be underselling him. By the end of the season, he could be joining Tate Southisene as the second member of Atlanta’s 2025 draft class to crack the top 100.

I keep saying this on an almost daily basis, but what the Braves have going on the farm right now is really special. They have talented players at every level and position far exceeding expectations — all while the major-league club is running through the league and sporting the best record in baseball.
