The New York Yankees scored runs against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, but shortstop Anthony Volpe committed a costly blunder in the eighth inning that gift-wrapped the latter team its third straight win.

The 24-year-old fumbled a routine ground ball with the bases loaded and one out before misfiring his throw to second. That allowed the Angels to score and take a 3-2 lead, which they held for the rest of the night.

New York snapped a 30-inning scoreless streak, but it has now lost six straight games. Manager Aaron Boone discussed Volpe's game-losing error after the contest, via YES Network.

"It was hit sharp, obviously tailor-made," he said. "Looked like it hopped up a little bit, I haven't watched the replay of it yet. Just didn't handle the ball."

The third-year veteran also went 0-for-4 and struck out in the last at-bat of the game.

Volpe is 0-for-15 over the last four games and is slashing .235/.307/.419 with eight homers and 39 RBI across 72 contests this season.

New York's lead over the Tampa Bay Rays atop the AL East has now shrunk to 1.5 games, and it's 4.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers for the best record in the AL.

Southpaw pitcher Carlos Rodon (8-5, 3.01 ERA) will start for the Yankees against Angels southpaw Tyler Anderson (2-4, 4.44 ERA) on Thursday. New York will try to avoid getting swept for the second straight series, as its last win was against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
