Injured New York Yankees slugger and team captain Aaron Judge could do nothing but watch as the Tampa Bay Rays earned a 4-3 win in the Bronx on Wednesday night en route to completing a three-game sweep in the American League Divisional Series.
While speaking with reporters after his club's defeat, Judge sent a strong message to Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and to team senior vice president/general manager Brian Cashman regarding what could be an unusual offseason for everybody involved.
"We're the Yankees," Judge directly said, per Phillip Martinez of SNY. "I feel like they should go all-in and do what they need to do. If we've got holes, if it's finding certain players or personnel, whatever we need, you got to go out there and get it. That's why I signed back here to play with the Yankees, is to fight for a championship every single year and go all-in. That's what I do every offseason, is get ready to give this team and this city everything I got. And I expect them to do the same."
Throughout 2026, Steinbrenner and Cashman were routinely accused of "running it back" with the same team that failed to advance past the ALDS last fall. In August, upset Yankees fans suggested Cashman could and should have added more than just first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. and outfielder Heliot Ramos ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
"It's tough to say," Judge responded when asked if he felt Cashman and Co. went "all-in enough" for 2026. "I want to trade for everybody, sign everybody every single year, but I know that's not realistic. They give us a winning team every single year, but that's not good enough here in New York. We're the Yankees. You've got to go out there and expect championships and go all-in every year. I'm excited to see what they do."
As noted by Josh Norris and J.J. Cooper of Baseball America, the Yankees could use upgrades at second base and at closer. That said, the upcoming free-agent class is on track to be weak as it pertains to clubs possibly finding offensive help. Additionally, it's unclear how franchises will handle business before the expected lockout officially begins.
Steinbrenner seemingly will retain both Cashman and Yankees manager Aaron Boone, in part because Judge has routinely made it known over the years that he doesn't want to play for a different skipper. As for Judge, injuries kept him out of action for all but seven games from June 1 through Wednesday's loss.
"It's always tough," Judge said about the Yankees being eliminated from the playoffs. "Anytime you're not the last team standing, and lose at home like that, three straight games, it's definitely difficult. It hurts. You want to be out there, all the rehab, all the work, coming here early, staying late. Any time you're banged up, you're trying to get back out there as soon as you can. Hurts not getting a chance to be out there and battling."
It remains to be seen when Judge will take the field for a meaningful game in 2027.
