Shohei Ohtani hit into a triple play in the sixth inning and later crushed a go-ahead home run in the ninth, but the Los Angeles Angels rallied to stun the Dodgers 7-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday night, capped by Jo Adell’s walk-off single.
The defending World Series champions dropped their third straight game, falling into a first-place tie with the San Diego Padres in the National League West.
Ohtani’s blast, his NL-leading 43rd homer of the season and fifth in six games, came off Kenley Jansen in the ninth with a 114.8 mph exit velocity, giving the Dodgers a 6-5 lead. The long ball also extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Earlier, Ohtani was at the center of the eighth triple play in Angels history. In the sixth, shortstop Zach Neto snared his line drive up the middle, stepped on second to double off Miguel Rojas, and fired to first, where Nolan Schanuel tagged out Dalton Rushing.
The Angels answered Ohtani’s ninth-inning shot with a rally of their own. Luis Rengifo singled and scored on Schanuel’s sacrifice fly to tie the game, but Dodgers reliever Ben Casparius (7-5) escaped further damage by striking out Taylor Ward with the bases loaded.
In the 10th, Connor Brogdon (3-1) kept the Dodgers off the board. Christian Moore’s bunt single advanced the automatic runner, Ward, to third, and Adell followed with a high chopper over the drawn-in infield for the game-winner.
Taylor Ward also homered — his 28th of the season — and drove in two runs for the Angels. Rushing hit his second career homer for the Dodgers, who have dropped all five meetings with the Angels this season.
Ohtani’s ninth-inning home run briefly gave the Dodgers the lead, but the Angels responded in the bottom half and sealed the game in extras with Adell’s walk-off hit.
Kenley Jansen’s streak of 21 consecutive appearances without an earned run — the longest of his career — ended with Ohtani’s homer.
Ohtani (0-0, 2.37 ERA) will take the mound for the Dodgers on Wednesday at Angel Stadium against Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (6-8, 4.63 ERA).
