The San Diego Padres enter the weekend just one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the National League West. After a three-game sweep against the Dodgers one week ago, the Padres bounced back with three wins in four games against the San Francisco Giants.

The Padres now host the Dodgers at Petco Park, although star outfielder Jackson Merrill has sat out the last four games. Merrill suffered an ankle injury, which initially had him listed as "day-to-day", but he has yet to play since leaving Sunday's game early due to the issue.

On the season, Merrill is hitting .261 with nine home runs and 51 RBI, so he has been a big part of the San Diego lineup after being the National League Rookie of the Year runner-up one year ago.

Ahead of the series against the Dodgers, all eyes are on Merrill's status.

Jackson Merrill Reveals Mindset Ahead of Dodgers Series

On Thursday, the Padres won their third straight game against the Giants, 8-4, to remain just one game back of the Dodgers.

After the win, Merrill spoke about his mindset as he tries to get back into the lineup, although he hasn't begun baseball activities yet, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

“Just taking the days on the downside, trying to get it to reset," Merrill said. “That’s pretty much it. Spirits are better. More optimistic, for sure. Less frustrated, but still getting there.”

After leaving Sunday's game early due to injury, Merrill admitted he was frustrated but remained hopeful about playing on Monday. However, the Padres outfielder has yet to play since then, although the team has also not yet placed him on the Injured List.

“Really, quite frankly, we’re going to give every leniency to see if he can come back," Padres manager Mike Shildt said on Thursday.

Shildt also mentioned on Thursday that Merrill was dealing with "Bone bruising," per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

Padres Rolling With Ramon Laureano in Merrill's Absence

With Merrill sidelined, it has been trade deadline acquisition Ramon Laureano who has stepped in at center field.

Laureano was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles at the deadline along with Ryan O'Hearn, and the veteran has already paid dividends with some clutch hits. He started the past three games in centerfield, so if Merrill continues to sit, it will likely be Laureano again taking his spot in the outfield.

For now, it remains to be seen if Merrill can return soon or if he lands on the IL, although he said he'd "love to" be out there against the Dodgers.
