Nick Pivetta’s future with the San Diego Padres remains uncertain as the club weighs its options for the right-hander ahead of the 2027 season. President of baseball operations A.J. Preller wants to find a way to keep Pivetta in San Diego, but the two sides face a contractual decision following the pitcher’s extended absence with an elbow injury.
Preller addressed the situation during the Padres’ end-of-season news conference Wednesday. According to Marty Caswell, who reported his comments on X, San Diego hopes to work out an agreement that keeps Pivetta with the organization.
The decision comes after Pivetta returned late in the regular season and delivered encouraging results. However, his injury history and the structure of his contract give the Padres a significant decision to make this offseason.

Pivetta signed a four-year, $55 million contract before the 2025 season. The agreement originally included player options for 2027 and 2028, but a clause tied to his time on the injured list changed the terms after his extended absence.
The right-hander missed 147 consecutive days with a right elbow flexor strain and inflammation before returning Sept. 7. He finished the 2026 regular season with a 3-2 record, a 2.86 ERA and 42 strikeouts across 34 2/3 innings.
Under the revised contract terms, San Diego holds a $14 million club option for 2027. If the Padres exercise it, Pivetta retains an $18 million player option for 2028, creating a potential two-year, $32 million commitment. The club could also explore a restructured agreement to manage the financial risk associated with his elbow history.
Pivetta’s late-season return gave the Padres another option for their rotation, and he also contributed during their postseason run. San Diego finished 91-71, earning a National League Wild Card spot before its season ended against the Milwaukee Brewers in the Division Series.
The Padres must now determine how Pivetta fits into their plans for 2027. With questions surrounding other rotation options, retaining an experienced starter could help address the club’s pitching needs, provided both sides can agree on terms.
