A week after Alek Manoah left his fifth start of 2024 with an injury, he gets word his season and attempt at a career resurgence is officially over.
Instead of trying to regain the form that saw him finish third in the American League Cy Young race in 2022, Manoah will have season ending UCL surgery. Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi was first to report the news, adding the exact type of procedure is still to be determined and it could end up being Tommy John.
Alek Manoah will undergo UCL surgery June 17, said John Schneider. Exact procedure TBD, could be TJ, could be repair with brace. Either way his season is over.

Prior to exiting his start on May 29 after only 1.2 innings pitched, Manoah’s 2024 season, one that was delayed due to opening the season on the injured list, was hot and cold.
The WVU product pitched a gem on May 19, throwing seven scoreless innings and becoming the second fastest pitcher in Blue Jays history to reach 400 career strikeouts. But Manoah then followed that strong showing by allowing six runs (four earned) off five hits in a loss to the Tigers a week later.
Manoah did not get on the mound this season until May 5 because of a right shoulder injury. He made five rehab starts across the minor leagues, most notably four for Triple A Buffalo. The former MLB All-Star surrendered 19 runs in 19.2 total innings in the minor leagues.
