Third baseman Alex Bregman has had a phenomenal MLB career thus far for the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox. In 10 total seasons, Bregman has a .272 batting average, an OPS of .846, 209 home runs and 725 RBIs. He has earned several honors in his career, including three All-Star selections, one Silver Slugger, one Gold Glove and two World Series titles.

This past season was Bregman's first with the Red Sox, as he batted .273 with a .360 OBP, 18 long balls and 62 RBIs in 114 games. His year was shortened due to a right quad injury that held him out for seven weeks.

Before the 2025 season, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston, but he opted out of the final two years of it when the Red Sox's season ended. This means that he is a free agent for the second straight offseason.

With his versatility at the plate and on the field, Bregman will garner a lot of attention throughout the winter.

ESPN reporter Jeff Passan gave an update on where things stand for Bregman in free agency on Tuesday.

"The Red Sox love Bregman, who opted out of the final two years and $80 million of his contract, and won't close the door on a reunion despite having Marcelo Mayer ready to play third," Passan said. "Detroit and Chicago, which pursued him last winter but came up short, will rejoin the fray, with Philadelphia lurking as it juggles multiple potential paths."

It is obvious that Boston would love to have Bregman back in the hot corner in 2026. However, the Tigers didn't have one third baseman start more than 85 games at the position last season, and the Cubs, who had Matt Shaw make 124 starts in 2025, would love an improvement.

As for the Phillies, they will be looking to make at least one big splash in free agency this offseason.

While Red Sox fans would welcome back Bregman with open arms, it is yet to be seen where the All-Star third baseman will land.
