Given the Boston Red Sox's current play, it's understandable if they decide to keep Alex Bregman around.
However, it remains uncertain what the Red Sox plan to do. With them now having the opportunity to at least make the postseason, if not more, considering the type of baseball they've played over the past 10 games, the Red Sox should be going all in at the trade deadline. Bregman recently returned to the lineup on Friday, where he got one hit in four at-bats. That was after a few months' absence, not appearing in a game since May 23.
Questions remain about Bregman's future over the next few months, and some have suggested that the Red Sox might consider moving on from him if they don't believe he'll be re-signed in the offseason.
According to a recent report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the two sides haven't even spoken about an extension.
“The Red Sox and Alex Bregman haven’t yet spoken about an extension.
“It’s rare a star of Bregman’s stature signs within months of unfettered (no qualifying offer attached) free agency. But there’s some chance, as both sides wouldn’t mind getting something done. The belief here is that with Bregman’s great start a deal would likely have to be around $184M (what he offered to sign with the Tigers), or perhaps even $200M,” he wrote.
It's somewhat telling that the Red Sox haven't spoken to Bregman about an extension, but it's also fair to note that he's been out for so long that it might not make too much sense for them to do so yet.
