The World Series kicked off on Friday night with the Toronto Blue Jays coming out on top against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now, the Blue Jays are three wins away from winning the World Series and officially kicking off the offseason across baseball. This is when things will really get interesting for the Boston Red Sox. Players have until five days after the World Series to officially make option decisions. For Boston, that's especially important for third baseman Alex Bregman.
He's expected to opt out, but shortly after the World Series is when things will become official and we'll even start to see bigger moves around the league. Bregman should be the Red Sox's No. 1 priority. When you have as big of an impact as he did in just one season, it's hard to believe a club would let him walk. But, we'll see. There are unsurprisingly a million opinions out there right now, some positive and some negative. Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley is on the more positive sign and predicted that Bregman will return.
"Per MLB.com's Ian Browne, 'there is mutual interest in a reunion.' Still, it will take the right offer to make that happen, since, as Browne noted, 'this is likely to be his last, best chance to get a long-term contract.' The Red Sox presumably should have an aggressive offer at the ready," Buckley said. "Their midseason subtraction of Rafael Devers cleared up their financial outlook and left a pressing need for an established bat in the heart of their lineup. Bregman can provide that presence, as he mostly did during his first season in Boston, tallying 18 homers, 62 RBI and 64 runs scored in his 114 games.
"If the Red Sox don't put the right combination of years and dollars in front of him, though, he'll have options. The Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies and Seattle Mariners are among his list of logical landing spots. Prediction: Bregman re-signs with the Red Sox."
This is just a prediction, but it would obviously be positive for Boston fans and is an example that perception around the Bregman sweepstakes is still somewhat positive, even with the reported opt-out.
Browne also noted that he doesn't expect Bregman to sign with a non-contender and that the Red Sox have "positioned themselves" to be contenders for years to come and noted that he believes Bregman liked playing at Fenway Park in front of the Boston fans this past season.
At the end of the day, what really matters is whatever Bregman thinks. But, this is the type of prediction that should get Red Sox fans excited, at least.
