In fairness, the Boston Red Sox likely knew that if Alex Bregman eventually opted out of the three-year deal he signed before spring training, it likely meant that the All-Star third baseman more than lived up to expectations.
Indeed, Bregman has been one of the American League’s more impressive players when healthy, and he’s positioned himself to cash in this coming winter. Bregman entered Wednesday batting .281 with 16 home runs, 25 doubles, 54 RBIs, and an .849 OPS for the second-place Red Sox. Not only has Bregman remained a plus-defender at third base, but he’s posted 3.3 bWAR in 95 games.
The bad news, at least for the Red Sox: Bregman’s latest strong season comes ahead of another shot at free agency, and ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan anticipates teams will offer the three-time All-Star a massive contract.
Passan reported on Thursday that he believes Bregman “is bound” to receive at least a five-year contract exceeding $35 million in average annual value. Although Passan suggested that the Red Sox could re-sign Bregman, he also listed the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies as potential suitors.
As things stand, there’s no reason to think the Red Sox won’t want to re-sign Bregman. In addition to terrorizing opposing pitching, Bregman has received rave reviews for taking many of Boston’s young players under his wing.
“Bregman has taken over the Red Sox’s clubhouse and become their unquestioned leader: a baseball rat whose wisdom is exceeded by his willingness to help his teammates find the best versions of themselves,” Passan wrote. “It’s rare to find a player who has such a wide base of knowledge and the ability to teach it, too.”

Whether or not the Red Sox should re-sign Bregman is another conversation, especially ahead of his age-32 season. We’re not expecting any 10-year, $500 million offers, but a player of Bregman’s résumé would be hard-pressed to turn down such a contract. However, the Red Sox should ask the New York Yankees how their six-year commitment to veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu went.
Actually, Bregman and LeMahieu’s situations aren’t entirely dissimilar. LeMahieu parlayed a two-year contract into a six-year, $90 million deal following the 2020 season, his age-32 campaign. Bregman is on the verge of using an opt-out clause to potentially earn a contract that a reputable MLB insider believes could surpass five years and $175 million.
