The Boston Red Sox have shown who they are over the past year and a half. This is a .500-ball club, and until they show anything different, that's what they should be considered.
Entering the season with lofty expectations, with some suggesting that the Red Sox had a chance to win a World Series, they sit at 27-28 and are six games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East.
It's still too early to be concerned about the standings, but the Red Sox's record isn't great. This team is much better than a game below .500, and Alex Cora understands that.
When speaking to reporters after the Red Sox's loss against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, he added that they're getting what they deserve, seemingly calling out the team for their lackluster play.
“It’s still the same thing, right? Around .500,” Cora said. “We didn’t gain momentum. We didn’t lose momentum. One game under, I think it is, right? So we’ve just gotta go on the road now. We’ve got Milwaukee. Good team. Got an off day in Atlanta. We were inconsistent in this homestead. It seems like when we hit, we didn’t pitch. And then when we pitched, we didn’t hit. So I think 5-5 is what we deserve.”
There have been issues on both sides of the baseball for the Red Sox. However, at times, their offense hasn't produced at the level it needs to.
They had 10 hits on Sunday, but managing to score just one run, the Red Sox's inability to manufacture runs has been an issue.
It'll be interesting to see what moves Cora and the rest of the staff make, but for now, the Red Sox just wasted a golden opportunity during a home stand.
