After videos surfaced on social media of Kristian Campbell taking reps at first base for the Boston Red Sox on Friday, many want to know the plan.
According to manager Alex Cora, the Red Sox are simply doing their due diligence on Campbell, hoping that the youngster might be able to learn the position.
“Looking for options,” Cora said, per NESN. “… Just introducing him to first base and see how he looks. That’s where we’re at.”
“Just my versatility, learning something new,” Campbell said. “Finding a new position. Trying something different.”
The Red Sox are in a brutal position regarding the first base situation, and until Rafael Devers decides to help the team out, it likely won't get much better.
Campbell is an athlete, and being as young as he is, he might be able to learn the position.
However, it's also a bit unfair to ask a 22-year-old who hasn't played first base throughout his career to move over to the position and deal with that pressure, too.
Campbell doesn't exactly have the body of a first baseman, either, and certainly doesn't play like one. However, as he said, if it'll help the team win, he's willing to do whatever it takes.
It might sound crazy, but Devers should start listening to the 22-year-old. A veteran, Devers is better than what he's doing.
He feels slighted, and until the Red Sox fix their previous mistakes, it looks like this will continue to be the case.
It's a brutal situation, but at least Campbell is willing to do what it takes to help the team win.
