On Monday (January 8), Jayesh Savla, a 52-year-old businessman was hit by a ball on the head. Savla was part of the Kutchi Community’s cricket tournament for veterans and the team played cricket at Dadar Union Sporting Club.

The man was playing cricket at Matunga’s Major Dhadkar Maidan in Mumbai and a ball from another match hit him. He was soon rushed to the Sion Hospital, but it was too late. He was declared dead by doctors and his funeral took place on Tuesday.

This incident happened due to adjacent games played at the maidan. The match from which the ball hit Savla was played at Dadar Parsee Colony pitch on the maidan.

Former managing committee member Ramesh Vazge said the advent of T20 cricket made the game more aggressive as batters would go for aerial shots right from the word go. Vazge coaches at New Hind SC ground. Rohit Gangar, who plays in the Vikas Legend Kutchi Cricket Cup, said the ball hit Savla on the head in the same manner Australia’s Philip Hughes was hit, which ultimately led to his death.

We had two matches on Monday afternoon, none at Dadar Union and the second at Dadar Parsee Colony pitch. Savla was playing for Gala Rocks against Master Blaster and was positioned at a point when the DPC game's batter hit a pull shot. The ball hit him on the back of his head, exactly where Australia's Phil Hughes had been hit, which led to his death. Rohit Gangar said (via Hindustan Times)
