On the day Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler learned he’d be on the National League All-Star team, he continued to improve on his bid to start the Midsummer Classic. In his first start since being named National League Pitcher of the Month for June – thanks to a 0.58 ERA with 42 strikeouts and just 20 hits over 31 innings – he bullied the Cincinnati Reds bats into submission with a complete game, one-hit performance with 12 K’s and zero walks. The one hit was an Austin Hays home run, just the fourth he’s surrendered since April.
“He was just dominant,” said Phillies manager Rob Thompson after the sparkling performance. “He had everything working. Control, command, everything was just great.”
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Wheeler is in his 11th MLB season and so far in his career he’s racked up 1,173 strikeouts and 112 wins in 277 career starts. With that being said, how many of the active MLB pitchers with at least 1,200 career K’s can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
