Mets' Tylor Megill nearing rehab assignment, could return during upcoming road trip

New York Mets right-hander Tylor Megill started throwing off flat ground over a week ago as part of his work toward returning from what was later referred to as a "relatively mild" case of biceps tendinitis in his pitching arm that put him on the injured list retroactive to May 12.

As Pat Ragazzo noted for FanNation's Inside the Mets, Megill tossed his first bullpen session since the injury this past Friday, and the 26-year-old was spotted throwing at Citi Field ahead of Tuesday night's 10-0 thrashing of the Washington Nationals:

According to Zach Braziller of the New York Post, Mets manager Buck Showalter told reporters ahead of the Wednesday afternoon home game versus Washington that Megill is "nearing a rehab assignment." Assuming that goes well and the righty doesn't suffer any setbacks, it's possible he could face big-league batters in a game during New York's upcoming road trip.

Following Wednesday's contest, the Mets will embark on a west coast journey to face the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Angels.

Megill initially replaced injured ace Jacob deGrom in the New York rotation and went 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA across seven starts. As for deGrom, he still hasn't logged a single start this season due to a stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder but reportedly could make his debut before the All-Star break.

Fellow ace Max Scherzer will likely remain out with an oblique strain until some point after the "Midsummer Classic."

Despite these injury woes, the Mets began Wednesday at 34-17 and held the most victories among all National League clubs.
