What Aroldis Chapman brings to the Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates have quietly upgraded their roster. Aroldis Chapman is a part of that quest.

Chapman had a rebound year in 2023. He posted a 3.09 ERA and a 1.251 WHIP in his 58.1 innings between the Royals and Rangers, striking out 103 batters. His command issues continued as he handed out 36 walks, but Chapman showed he could be a force in the bullpen once more.

The Pirates now have a potentially dominant trio in the back of their bullpen. David Bednar has emerged as one of the better closers in the game, a two-time All-Star who led the National League in saves in 2023.

Colin Holderman emerged as an excellent setup man, a ground ball machine who emerged from nowhere. Chapman fills a gaping hole as a flamethrowing lefty in the eighth inning.

Chapman can provide another intangible bonus to the Pirates. He has been a part of two World Series championships. His eight-out save in Game 5 of the 2016 World Series set the stage for the Cubs to come back against Cleveland, leading to their curse-ending title.

The Pirates may not be viewed as a playoff team in the coming year, but having someone with that experience can be valuable going forward.

There is another potential benefit as well. Chapman could be a highly sought-after trade chip at the deadline. The Royals were able to send Chapman to Texas for Cole Ragans and intriguing minor league outfielder Roni Cabrera.

Ragans showed the potential to be a top-of-the-rotation arm for the Royals; with a strong start to the season, Chapman could generate a similar return for the Pirates.

Aroldis Chapman instantly upgrades the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen. He could provide longer-term benefits as well.
