Andrew McCutchen and the Texas Rangers recently agreed to a minor league contract. It seemed as if McCutchen was destined to retire with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the former MVP ended up landing a deal with Texas at 39 years old. He is ready for this next chapter of his career. It is a minor league deal, though, so McCutchen will need to play well in order to make the Opening Day roster.
The Rangers would surely love to have a veteran like McCutchen on the roster. He will bring leadership and experience to a Texas ball club that is trying to get back on track after back-to-back underwhelming seasons. The Rangers have potential, though, as they were World Series champions just a few years ago in 2023.
Perhaps McCutchen will help the Rangers begin winning on a consistent basis once again. First, however, he will need to make the big league ball club. It will be a challenge since a number of players are competing for a spot, but McCutchen has the advantage of being a respected MLB veteran and former MVP-caliber superstar.
McCutchen spoke with reporters on Friday after the Rangers officially announced his new deal. The new Texas outfielder revealed why he decided to sign with the Rangers in MLB free agency., via Jeff Wilson.
"Honestly, it was one of the first options for me. And, also, at the moment it was one of the only options as well," McCutchen said. "I understood things were happening, there were opportunities maybe elsewhere, but I also understood there was less than three weeks, too. So, if teams wanted to get a look at me, there was no waiting around... I understood that if I wanted to continue to play or have an opportunity or a chance that I needed to jump on an opportunity when presented. So, that's what I did here."

McCutchen began his career with the Pirates and established himself as a star. He later played with a few other teams before returning to Pittsburgh for 2023. Now, following three additional seasons with the Pirates, McCutchen is preparing to play with the Rangers.
"One door closes, another one opens," McCutchen added. "Grateful that the Rangers are giving me this chance."
