Andy Green Provides Devin Williams Update

On Saturday, ahead of the team’s game against the San Francisco Giants, manager Andy Green provided an update on Williams to the media.

“He’s throwing, he’s playing catch. Don’t have a date for you as to when he’ll be back. He’s still targeting pitching this season. We’re still of that mindset right now, so he’s in his throwing progression.”

Green went on to say that Williams has yet to step back on the mound and has not faced any live batters since his throwing progression began. With just 21 games left in the Mets’ season, Williams’ timeline to return remains murky at best.

Williams signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Mets in the offseason after playing for the New York Yankees in 2025. While once one of the feared closers in MLB, Williams has certainly lost some of his luster since moving to New York. In 42 appearances this year, Williams has a 4.66 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 16 saves in 38.2 innings of work.

Since Williams has been on the IL, his closer role has been temporarily usurped by former starter Kodai Senga. In 10 relief appearances, Senga has posted a dominant line of 1.98 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and five saves. At this point, it’s hard to say if Williams would get his closer role back if he were to return before the end of the season.

Williams would presumably be the favorite to be the Mets’ closer in 2027, although both he and Senga are signed through at least 2028. It could create an interesting offseason narrative if both pitchers are back with the Mets next season, and be one of the position battles to watch next Spring Training.
